Inmate Who Walked Away from Vallecito Conservation Camp Apprehended in Bakersfield

Vallecito, CA…From the we should have posted this earlier but fires got in the way Dept. From CDCR…”California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials apprehended a minimum-security inmate who walked away from Vallecito Conservation Camp (CC#1) in Calaveras County on Aug. 14.

Torrence Weitzel was apprehended without incident as he attempted to flee from a residence in the Bakersfield area around 3:45 p.m. by investigators and special agents from CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety, Special Service Unit. Local law enforcement assisted in the arrest.

Weitzel has been transported to North Kern State Prison and will no longer be eligible to be housed in a conservation camp. The case will be referred to the local district attorney’s office for possible escape charges.

Weitzel, 25, walked away from Vallecito Conservation Camp in Angels Camp yesterday following the morning count. He was received by CDCR in March 2021 from Kern County with a five-year sentence for discharging a firearm, buying/receiving stolen property and vehicle theft.

Since 1977, 99 percent of all offenders who have left an adult institution, camp or community-based program without permission have been apprehended.”
