Bear Valley Vacation Rentals and its sister company, Bear Valley Real Estate, are locally owned and operated by Joel and Pamela Barnett. Wanting a change from their urban lifestyle and work in downtown San Francisco they came up with two options: move to either Hawaii or Bear Valley. A paradise in its own right, Bear Valley won out and they made their cabin home in 2002. That same year, they purchased the businesses and have been happily exploring (and helping their clients and guests explore) our pretty little nook of the Sierra Nevada. See below for their insider tips to enjoying the area. Hint: pancakes are key.

Pamela’s Perfect Summer Day:

Wake up and eat pancakes before taking a spectacular hike out of Woodchuck Basin to Wheeler Ridge. Enjoy lunch on the deck at Lake Alpine Resort before an afternoon swim in Bear Lake. End the day with a potluck dinner at home followed by s’mores and hanging with friends around the campfire.

A few of her favorite things: The confluence of Duck Creek and the Mokelumne River. Skate skiing the Tamarack Trail with Katie (the Barnett family dog). The views from the chair lifts at Bear Valley Mountain. The hike to the cliffs behind Sky High Ranch.

Joel’s Perfect Winter Day:

Wake up, start the woodstove and get the house warm and cozy. Enjoy a pancake breakfast with my family before heading out the door to ski three feet of fresh powder. Sneak in a therapeutic sports massage at Trinity Wellness and end the day with a good bottle of red wine shared between Bear Valley friends.

A few of his favorite things:The Bear Valley Ball Field at 6 PM on a summer evening, just as the weekly game of pick-up soccer begins. A snowmobile ride to Highland Lakes.A bonfire on Blood’s Point. Swimming an hour before sundown at the Hell’s Kitchen Lower Falls.
