Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway Still Scenic After Washington Fire

Markleeville, CA…Last weekend we had to drop an offspring for summer camp and thought it would be a good time to take a quick drive over Ebbetts Pass and to see how the Markleeville area looked after the over 15,000 acre Washington fire. The Fire closed Hwy 4 and Hwy 89 for almost a week. The Hwy 4 area actually looks pretty good. Some burned areas but it looked like it was fairly fast moving in these areas and some of the trees will probably survive.

Taking a right on Hwy 89 and you immediately see where the heavy heat concentrations were. While much of this area is largely smaller trees, underbrush and sage it was charred down to the nub. Good news is our Scenic Byway is safe and scenic but other areas will take some years to restore.

We used a new high tech steady cam system consisting of an arm stuck through a sunroof. Panoramic shot were achieved by rotating the wrist at the top of said arm.
