ARNOLD POST OFFICE \u2013 On Tuesday, July 28, local postal workers will be sounding the alarm about pending actions in Washington related ARNOLD POST OFFICE and the surrounding area. Members of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) will be holding a \u201cProtect Our Public Post Office Day of Action\u201d outside ARNOLD POST OFFICE calling for the public\u2019s help to avoid service problems, maintain the ability to vote-by-mail and to stabilize the USPS\u2019 finances. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Postal workers are very concerned that President Trump has sent to the Senate four nominees to the USPS\u2019\u00a0 Board of Governors who have no experience related to the USPS or even in the wider logistics and delivery industry. The Board of Governors sets policy and oversees the USPS.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re urging postal customers to contact Senators Alejandro \u201cAlex\u201d Padilla and Adam Schiff and ask them to vote against these nominees due to their lack of experience,\u201d said Liset Hernandez Modesto Area Local 635.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a critical time for the USPS, and we need leaders at the top who understand this important institution and are committed to public service.<\/p>\n

The USPS is one of America\u2019s most trusted public institutions. Most Americans have a positive impression of the USPS. According\u00a0 to the Pew Research Center, the postal service ranks only second to the National Park Service among federal agencies in favorability ratings. The USPS delivers mail and packages regularly to 170 million residential and business addresses. \u201cEvery postal worker takes pride in serving postal customers and we clearly have a stake in protecting the USPS, but we\u2019re not in this alone, everyone has a stake in what happens to the USPS in coming weeks,\u201d said Liset Hernandez Modesto Area Local 635.<\/p>\n
The USPS is a public service \u2013 not a business \u2014 it is legally mandated to serve every household in every zip code, no matter how rural or remote. It earns most of its revenue from the sale of stamps and services and is not designed to make a profit. \u00a0However, the postal service is under financial pressure and at the same time pressure to modernize.<\/p>\n
Those issues could largely be addressed if Congress would allow the postal service to place its pension investments in more diversified investment funds. The USPS has over $300 billion in two pension funds and a retiree health benefit fund. Under current law, USPS can only invest those funds in US Treasury securities which return 2-3% per year. By allowing USPS to diversify its investment strategy \u2013 like other businesses do and some parts of the government already do \u2013 it would return much higher yields.<\/p>\n
If the USPS\u2019 Board of Governors and the Postmaster General fail to seek these financial and structural fixes, the USPS would likely be forced to cut hours and services at postal counters, raise prices for mail and packages and close some post offices.<\/p>\n
The next three months also will be pivotal for those who choose to vote by mail. Voting by mail has proven to be safe and secure. It\u2019s been used since the U.S. Civil War and in 2024\u2019s election 1 out of every 3 ballots was cast through the mail. However, some in Congress want to delegitimize mail ballots and pass the SAVE America Act, which if enacted, would limit the use of vote-by-mail. The courts will also decide in coming days if a March executive order that creates unnecessary roadblocks for those seeking mail ballots is allowed to move forward<\/p>\n
Along with postal workers in Arnold, on Tuesday postal workers will be holding signs and walking informational picket lines at similar events scheduled for Washington, Providence, Omaha, and Los Angeles, among other locations.<\/p>\n
