Sacramento, CA…California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today released a statement following news that the U.S. Supreme Court denied the federal government\u2019s petition for review in\u00a0United States v. California<\/em>: \u201cIn California, we\u2019ve seen the success that comes from building trust between law enforcement and our hard-working immigrant communities. The last thing we need to do is to erode that trust. Today, America is experiencing the pain and protest that occurs when trust is broken,\u201d\u00a0said Attorney General Becerra.\u00a0<\/b>\u201cThat\u2019s why this fight mattered so much. We\u2019re protecting Californians\u2019 right to decide how we do public safety in our state.\u00a0The Trump Administration does not have the authority to commandeer state resources.\u00a0We\u2019re heartened by today\u2019s Supreme Court decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

At issue in the federal government\u2019s petition for review in\u00a0United States v. California\u00a0<\/em>was whether federal law preempts Senate Bill 54 (SB 54), a law enacted in 2017 that is intended to protect public safety by enhancing trust between state and local law enforcement and the communities they serve. In 2019, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit\u00a0upheld the ruling by the district court<\/a>\u00a0against the federal government on\u00a0SB 54, noting that the federal government was unlikely to succeed on the merits. The\u00a0district court\u2019s decision in favor of\u00a0SB 54<\/a>\u00a0occurred in 2018.<\/p>\n
