<\/p>\nSacramento, CA…Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring June 20, 2020, as \u201cJuneteenth National Freedom Day: A Day of Observance\u201d in the State of California. The text of the proclamation can be found here and a copy can be found below: <\/p>\n

PROCLAMATION
\nJuneteenth commemorates an extraordinary moment, and this year, we
\ncelebrate during an extraordinary time.<\/p>\n
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led troops into
\nGalveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and the insidious
\ninstitution of slavery. Thousands of enslaved people in Texas \u2013 among the
\nlast to learn of their liberation \u2013 tasted hard-won freedom for the first time.<\/p>\n
The joyous commemorations that began in Texas spread around the
\nnation, with cities and communities in California joining in celebration of this
\nmilestone in the American journey to freedom for all. Since 2003, the State
\nof California has celebrated Juneteenth as a day to honor and reflect on
\nthe significant contributions of Black Americans to our nation.<\/p>\n
This year, Juneteenth celebrations take place amid continued calls for
\njustice, with people across the nation speaking out against systemic racism
\nand its deadly consequences for Black Americans. These demonstrations,
\nfueling important reforms throughout the United States, are the latest
\ncontributions to building a more perfect union \u2013 where liberty and justice
\nare indeed \u201cfor all.\u201d We remember those who have lived and died in this
\npursuit, and their memory inspires us to continue that project.<\/p>\n
Today, I urge all Californians to reflect on the ongoing cause of freedom for
\nBlack Americans \u2013 remembering that, though General Granger\u2019s
\nannouncement in 1865 called for \u201cabsolute equality,\u201d that vision was, and
\nremains, far from complete. This year, the California State Capitol will be lit
\nin the pan-African colors of red, black and green, which represent the<\/p>\n
African diaspora to enslavement in the New World; as those of us who work
\nin the building continue to advance policies that promote equity and right
\nhistoric wrongs. Let us all redouble our commitment to use our power to
\nstamp out racism in our communities and institutions and help secure
\nfreedom for all.<\/p>\n
NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do
\nhereby proclaim June 20, 2020, as \u201cJuneteenth National Freedom Day: A
\nDay of Observance.\u201d
