This investment includes nearly $1.1 billion in allocations for State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) projects, Caltrans\u2019 \u201cfix-it-first\u201d program aimed at preserving the condition of the State Highway System.  The approved funding is from federal and state gas taxes, including $800 million from SB 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/caltransm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"203\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/caltransm.jpg 214w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/caltransm-150x142.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese vital investments will help keep our highways safe and efficient for all users,\u201d said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. \u201cThis includes improving safety and access for cyclists and pedestrians through investments in active transportation facilities that support individual and public health, cleaner air and reduced dependence on driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Projects approved in Caltrans District 10 include:<br \/>\n\u2022 Traffic Management Systems Upgrades for Interstate 5 (I-5), State Route 99 (SR-99), SR-59 and SR-152 in San Joaquin, Merced and Stanislaus Counties: $11.5 million traffic management systems project will upgrade or replace inefficient and damaged Transportation Management System (TMS) elements including Microwave Vehicle Detection Systems (MVDS) and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS) in San Joaquin, Merced, and Stanislaus Counties on I-5 and Routes 59, 99, and 152 at various locations. This project will help reduce congestion and improve operational efficiency.<br \/>\n\u2022 Murphys Left-turn Lane Project On State Route 4 in Calaveras County: $3.3<br \/>\nmillion left turn lane project in Murphys. The project will improve traffic<br \/>\noperations by constructing a two-way left turn lane from Pennsylvania<br \/>\nGulch Road to Mitchler Street and upgrading an existing flashing beacon.<br \/>\n\u2022 Angels Camp Active Transportation Project Along Route 49 in Calaveras<br \/>\nCounty: $1.8 million Active Transportation Project located on Route 49 and<br \/>\nMain Street in Angels Camp. The project will includes the widening a<br \/>\nnarrow section of new pavement; construction of new curb, gutter, and<br \/>\nsidewalk; and the roadway will be signed and striped for a new bike lane.<br \/>\n\u2022 Traffic Safety Improvements Along Route 140 In Merced County: $5.8<br \/>\nmillion project will provide traffic safety enhancements at various locations<br \/>\nfrom Interstate 5 to 6.0 miles east of the city of Merced. The project will<br \/>\nreduce the number and severity of collisions by upgrading guardrail, end<br \/>\ntreatments, and crash cushions.<br \/>\n\u2022 Route 49 Paving Project in Mariposa County: $18.3 million project will<br \/>\nrepave the roadway from the Madera County line to the south junction<br \/>\nwith Route 140. The project will rehabilitate pavement by grinding and<br \/>\noverlaying with rubberized asphalt, reconstructing rumble strips, dikes, and<br \/>\ndown drains, and upgrading guardrail. This project will extend the<br \/>\npavement service life and improve ride quality.<br \/>\n\u2022 Interstate 5 Stockton Channel Viaduct Deck Rehabilitatoin Project in San<br \/>\nJoaquin County: $5.3 million project in Stockton, at the Stockton Channel<br \/>\nViaduct. The project will provide bridge deck rehabilitation at spot<br \/>\nlocations.<br \/>\n\u2022 State Route 99 Victor Road \/(SR-12) Ramp Realignment Project in San<br \/>\nJoaquin County: $15 million project will realign the northbound on-ramp<br \/>\nbetween Victor Road and Turner Road in Lodi. The project will improve<br \/>\ntraffic operations by realigning the northbound on-ramp, increasing bridge<br \/>\nvertical clearance and constructing an auxiliary lane.<\/p>\n<p>Funding in the new 2020 SHOPP will support 310 miles of new and repaired bike<br \/>\nlanes, installation and repair of nearly 50 miles of sidewalk, nearly 3,000 new<br \/>\ncrosswalks, and 178 transit stop improvements, such as bus shelters. With this<br \/>\nweek\u2019s action, the commission has approved a total of $100 million to fund<br \/>\nprojects that improve pedestrian and bike access and safety. Caltrans is<br \/>\nengaged with local stakeholders to identify active transportation improvements<br \/>\nto 22 current projects, with additional projects determined through community<br \/>\noutreach and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>Separate from the SHOPP, more than $500 million in funds approved this week<br \/>\nare for rail and mass transit projects, including intercity rail and bus services.<br \/>\nFunded in part by SB 1, this allocation expands access to public transportation<br \/>\nand helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, vehicle miles traveled, and<br \/>\ncongestion.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s portion of SB 1 funds represents an ongoing investment for the<br \/>\nmaintenance and rehabilitation of the State Highway System.
