Authored by Assemblymember Eloise Gomez Reyes, the bill allows nonviolent offenders who have fought fires as members of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation\u2019s fire camps to have their records expunged, paving the way for individuals leaving fire camps to seek meaningful employment and further training.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1-86x54.jpg 86w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1-120x74.jpg 120w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1-378x237.jpg 378w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis legislation rights a historic wrong and recognizes the sacrifice of thousands of incarcerated people who have helped battle wildfires in our state, and I would like to thank the Legislature for passing this bill,\u201d said Governor Newsom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSigning AB 2147 into law is about giving second chances. To correct is to right a wrong;  to rehabilitate is to restore,\u201d said Assemblymember Gomez Reyes. \u201cRehabilitation without strategies to ensure the formerly incarcerated have a career is a pathway to recidivism. We must get serious about providing pathways for those that show the determination to turn their lives around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite their experience and qualifications, many formerly incarcerated firefighters struggle to obtain licenses and employment due to their criminal records.
