In 1947, he became the first pilot in history confirmed to have exceeded the\u00a0speed of sound<\/a> in level flight.\u00a0 Yeager’s career began in\u00a0World War II<\/a>\u00a0as a\u00a0private<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0United States Army Air Forces<\/a>\u00a0in 1941.[a]<\/a>\u00a0After serving as an aircraft mechanic, in September 1942 he entered\u00a0enlisted<\/a>\u00a0pilot training and upon graduation was promoted to the rank of\u00a0flight officer<\/a>\u00a0(the World War II USAAF equivalent to\u00a0warrant officer<\/a>), later achieving most of his aerial victories as a\u00a0P-51<\/a>\u00a0fighter pilot<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0Western Front<\/a>, where he shot down over 11 enemy aircraft.<\/p>\n

After the war, Yeager became a test pilot of many types of aircraft, including experimental rocket-powered aircraft. As the first human to officially break the\u00a0sound barrier<\/a>, on October 14, 1947, he flew the experimental\u00a0Bell X-1<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0Mach<\/a>\u00a01 and an altitude of 45,000 feet (13,700\u00a0m), for which he won both the\u00a0Collier<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Mackay<\/a>\u00a0trophies in 1948. He then went on to break several other speed and altitude records.<\/p>\n

Yeager later commanded fighter squadrons and wings in Germany, as well as in\u00a0Southeast Asia<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0Vietnam War<\/a>. In recognition of the outstanding performance ratings of those units, he was promoted to\u00a0brigadier general<\/a>\u00a0in 1969, retiring on March 1, 1975. Yeager’s three-war active-duty flying career spans more than 30 years and has taken him to many parts of the world, including the\u00a0Soviet Union<\/a>\u00a0during the height of the\u00a0Cold War<\/a>.”<\/p>\n
