Becerra, a case challenging California\u2019s ban on the acquisition and possession of large-capacity magazines (LCMs). Last August, the Attorney General \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-becerra-continues-defense-california%E2%80%99s-ban-acquisition-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filed a petition seeking review<\/a> of a divided three-judge panel\u2019s decision to uphold a federal district court\u2019s ruling that the LCM ban is unconstitutional. In today&#8217;s order, the court also vacated the three-judge panel&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-82791\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cadoj.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cadoj.jpg 225w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cadoj-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cadoj-30x30.jpg 30w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" align=\"left\" bgcolor=\"#ffffff\" width=\"560\">\n<div>\n<p>\u201cLarge-capacity magazines have been used in many horrific mass shootings around the country, including right here in California,\u201d\u00a0<b>said Attorney General Becerra.\u00a0<\/b>\u201cThat\u2019s why today\u2019s decision by the Ninth Circuit to rehear this case is critical; it is the next step in the defense our state\u2019s commonsense gun laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LCMs are\u00a0firearm\u00a0magazines\u00a0that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. LCMs have been used in numerous horrific mass shootings throughout the country, including\u00a0the tragic shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks in 2018\u00a0and\u00a0the shooting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino in 2015.\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tc.columbia.edu\/articles\/2019\/october\/banning-large-capacity-magazines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 study by Columbia University<\/a>\u00a0found\u00a0that, \u201cdeaths in high-fatality mass shootings, relative to the population, were more than three times higher in states that did not restrict LCMs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In California, it has been illegal to manufacture, import, keep or offer for sale, give, or lend LCMs since 2000. It has been illegal to purchase and receive them since 2013. Proposition 63, which was passed by Californians in 2016, added a ban on the possession of LCMs.\u00a0The ban on the sale, purchase, manufacture, importation, or acquisition of\u00a0LCMs remains in effect\u00a0during the appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Becerra is committed to protecting the public and upholding California\u2019s gun safety laws. Last year, the Attorney General and\u00a0the\u00a0Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-becerra-and-giffords-law-center-lead-lawsuit-demanding-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">led a coalition in filing a lawsuit against the Trump Administration<\/a>\u00a0demanding the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regulate\u00a0the unfinished pistol frames and rifle receivers used to make\u00a0untraceable \u201cghost guns\u201d the same way it regulates other firearms.\u00a0Attorney General Becerra also filed a petition last August in the San Francisco Superior Court\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-becerra-petitions-court-require-glockstore-comply-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requesting that the court order San Diego-based Glockstore<\/a>, a business that sells factory-made serialized Glock\u00a0handguns,\u00a0aftermarket parts, and\u00a0ghost\u00a0gun kits, to comply with an outstanding subpoena and investigative interrogatories previously issued by the Attorney General. In January 2020, Attorney General Becerra joined a multistate lawsuit to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-becerra-joins-multistate-lawsuit-prevent-distribution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">block the Trump Administration\u2019s irresponsible efforts<\/a>\u00a0to loosen regulations governing blueprints for 3D-printed ghost guns.
