{"id":117667,"date":"2021-04-09T21:41:44","date_gmt":"2021-04-10T04:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/69.46.6.243\/?p=117667"},"modified":"2021-04-09T21:41:44","modified_gmt":"2021-04-10T04:41:44","slug":"president-biden-on-the-weekly-economic-briefing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/?p=117667","title":{"rendered":"President Biden on the Weekly Economic Briefing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC&#8230;Well, first of all, Jill and I, and the entire administration, send our condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the loss of Prince Philip.  He was a heck of a guy.  He \u2014 you know, he was \u2014 in his lifetime of service to the United Kingdom and the whole Commonwealth was visible to everybody for a long, long time, and his bravery serving in World War II, as well as his being a champion of the environment, as well as the charity \u2014 the charitable things he set up.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ptGhALV8mb8\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So we really do express our condolences for an extraordinary life that was led by the Prince.  And I think he\u2019s going to be missed, particularly in the United Kingdom.  Ninety-nine years old and he never slowed down at all, and \u2014 which I admire the devil out of.<\/p>\n<p>And today, we\u2019re meeting on \u2014 we\u2019re having an economic briefing here with the team.  I sent to Congress my funding priorities for the appropriations process, including two key public health initiatives that I\u2019m pushing.<\/p>\n<p>The first is \u2014 like DARPA in the Defense Department, which was designed to develop, and has developed, breakthroughs to protect us and enhance our physical safety \u2014 I\u2019m proposing a $6.5 billion appropriation for what we call \u201cARPA-H,\u201d which is focused on going to \u2014 focused on health issues. <\/p>\n<p>This is a pioneering breakthrough that we hope we can detect and treat and prevent diseases like Alzheimer\u2019s and diabetes, and give us a chance to end cancer as we know it, because we\u2019ll focus exclusively on those items.<\/p>\n<p>And secondly, I\u2019m proposing a historic funding increase of 50 percent up to \u2014 of $4 billion to end the opioid crisis, which still ravages the country and has taken so many lives over the last two years; resources both to the states and to Tribes for treatment, as well as prevention. <\/p>\n<p>That also includes the single-largest funding increase ever for Title I schools \u2014 schools for disadvantaged schools \u2014 to lift up the millions of children in low-income families.  And it\u2019ll put them in a position where all the data is \u2014 we\u2019ve \u2013I\u2019ve talked a lot about this \u2014 the data shows that it puts a child from a household that is a lower-income household in a position, if they start school \u2014 not daycare, but school \u2014 at three and four years old, there\u2019s overwhelming evidence that they are able to compete all the way through high school and beyond. <\/p>\n<p>And so it doubles the funding as well for \u2014 for VAWA services, including resources to end the rape kit backlog.  We\u2019ve been working on this for a long, long time, and we still have a backlog on the rape kit.  And \u2014 and the point is: A significant number of women who have been raped \u2014 and the person has not been found or convicted is because they\u2019re sitting in jail.  The average rapist rapes about six times. <\/p>\n<p>And so, out there, we\u2019re \u2014 we want to make sure we go through this backlog and find out, to bring some \u2014 some certitude to \u2014 for the woman who is saying, \u201cNo, no, it was true.  That\u2019s the man.  He did it.\u201d  And it changes the whole perspective \u2014 all the hearings we held on that. <\/p>\n<p>And also there \u2014 it makes major investments in the fight against climate change. <\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s issues that are personal to millions of Americans in the area of VAWA, because I get that asked, and we get spoken to by everyone from mayors and governors, local officials of both parties. <\/p>\n<p>So I look forward to working with Congress to advance these and other priorities.  I think we\u2019re going to be able to get \u2014 I\u2019m hoping we will have some bipartisan support across the board.  I\u2019ve already spoken to some of my Republican colleagues about dealing with the infrastructure legislation we have up there, as well as other budget items.  So we\u2019re going to work on seeing if we can get some bipartisan support across the board here. <\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s what we\u2019re about to do now.  We\u2019re going to talk about our economic priorities, and we\u2019ll get the brief from the team here.
