I told you a moment ago that I would comment briefly on what happened in \u2014 in Minnesota last night.  We\u2019ve spoken to the governor and the mayor.  I\u2019ve spoken to the authorities there.  And \u2014 and I haven\u2019t called Daunte Wright\u2019s family, but our prayers are with the family.  It was a really tragic thing that happened.  We\u2019re \u2014 and \u2014 but I think we got to wait and see what the investigation shows \u2014 and the entire investigation. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lRom3_AeiuU\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve all watched, I assume \u2014 as I did \u2014 the film, which is fairly \u2014 the body cam \u2014 which is fairly \u2014 fairly graphic.  The question is: Was it an accident?  Was it intentional?  That remains to be determined by a full-blown investigation. <\/p>\n<p>But, in the meantime, I want to make it clear again: There is absolutely no justification \u2014 none \u2014 for looting, no justification for violence.  Peaceful protest, understandable. <\/p>\n<p>And the fact is that, you know, we do know that the anger, pain, and trauma that exists in the Black community in that environment is real, it\u2019s serious, and it\u2019s consequential.  But it will not justify violence and\/or looting. <\/p>\n<p>And so, the question is how we, in an orderly way, make clear that they get down to a full-blown investigation to determine what the facts are and what is likely to have happened. <\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, we\u2019re calling for peace and calm.  And we should listen to Daunte\u2019s mom, who is calling for peace and calm. <\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s all I have to say at this moment on that issue.  So \u2014<\/p>\n<p>Q    Mr. President, do you think there should be federal resources to help keep the peace?  Do you think you need to take any additional steps?<\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT:  There are already federal resources.  And we have a significant \u2014 we\u2019ve spent a significant amount of time, unrelating to this particular case, in dealing with what may be the aftermath of anything that happens with the trial that\u2019s underway. <\/p>\n<p>But there will not be lack of help and support from the federal government if the local authorities believe it\u2019s needed.  I hope it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>Q    Are you concerned things could be on a razor\u2019s edge, sir?<\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT:  I\u2019m not going to speculate now.  I\u2019m hopeful that there will be a verdict and an outcome that will be supported by the vast majority of the people in the region.  And that\u2019s my expectation and hope. <\/p>\n<p>Thank you.<\/p>\n<p>Q    Mr. President, do you want to speak on infrastructure? <\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you.  Thank you. <\/p>\n<p>Q    Mr. President, do you want to speak on infrastructure at all, sir?<\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT:  I think \u2014 that\u2019s why we\u2019re here.  It\u2019s a bipartisan meeting here.  We got the Dean here.  Don Young is here.  We got the Dean.  So everything is going to be all right. <\/p>\n<p>But, all kidding aside, we\u2019re \u2014 we\u2019re \u2014 I\u2019m prepared to negotiate as to how \u2014 the extent of the \u2014 my infrastructure project, as well as how we pay for it.  But I \u2014 if we get in a serious conversation about how to do that. <\/p>\n<p>I think everyone acknowledges we need significant increase in infrastructure.  It\u2019s going to get down to what we call infrastructure.  Some people don\u2019t think that \u2014 I\u2019m not suggesting anybody here has that view, but there\u2019s a lot of folks saying that the fact that we have millions of people not able to drink water because there\u2019s lead in the \u2014 there \u2014 it\u2019s coming through lead pipes \u2014 I think that\u2019s infrastructure.  I think broadband is infrastructure.  It\u2019s not just roads, bridges, highways, et cetera. <\/p>\n<p>So that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to talk about, and I\u2019m confident everything is going to work out perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Q    Mr. President, some Republicans \u2014 some Republicans say that they\u2019re concerned about being \u201cwindow dressing,\u201d Mr. President.<\/p>\n<p>THE PRESIDENT:  I\u2019m not big on window dressing, if you\u2019ve observed. <\/p>\n<p>Thank you very much. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC&#8230;Hello, everybody.
