<\/a><\/p>\n\u201cThis project will realign an undulating, two-lane portion of SR 4 to improve traffic operations, enhance motorists\u2019 safety, and bolster the local economy,\u201d said Caltrans District 10 Director Dennis T. Agar. \u201cThe collaboration between Caltrans, Calaveras County, and our partners exemplifies what can be accomplished when agencies work together to deliver projects that benefit the public.\u201d<\/p>\n
Phase 1 of the two-phase project will cover approximately three miles from Bonanza Mine Way to Appaloosa Road in Angels Camp. Construction is scheduled to be completed in late 2023. Phase 2 will improve a stretch of State Route 4 on the east side of the Wagon Trail.<\/p>\n
The Wagon Trail project has been Calaveras County\u2019s highest priority for the past ten years. Caltrans worked closely with the Calaveras County Department of Public Works, the Calaveras Council of Governments, the California Transportation Commission, and several other partners to bring this project to fruition.

State Route 4 connects residents to local schools and businesses; commuters to their jobs in the Valley; visitors to area shops, restaurants, and wineries; and recreation enthusiasts to natural attractions in the Sierra Nevada.
\nState Route 4 can be unforgiving to those who drive too fast or lose focus navigating the rolling terrain and blind curves. The realignment will provide a smoother ride and better sight distance so motorists can make safer decisions on the road. The project also calls for the construction of roadside shoulders to safely harbor disabled vehicles.<\/p>\n
SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually split between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1.
