Markleeville, CA…Now, less than a year after the Tamarack Fire blew through parts of Alpine County including the small town of Markleeville where Turtle Rock Park Campground is located, debris removal operations managed by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) have reached completion.
\n\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In total, state-contracted crews removed more than\u00a095.2 tons\u00a0<\/strong>of debris generated by the Tamarack Fire. Included among the\u00a095.2 tons<\/strong>\u00a0of debris removed were\u00a04.85 tons<\/strong>\u00a0of burned metal,\u00a045 tons<\/strong>\u00a0of burned concrete,\u00a019.5 tons\u00a0<\/strong>of ash and debris and\u00a025.89 tons\u00a0<\/strong>of soil.<\/p>\n

“Turtle Rock Park is an important recreational wonderland to Markleeville residents and tourists, having attracted hikers, bikers, disc golf enthusiasts, and everything in between,\u201d said Ryan Buras, Deputy Director of Recovery Operations for Cal OES. \u201cThanks to the state recovery team\u2019s hard work of removing wildfire debris, the park is steps closer to reopening and inviting back valuable recreation enthusiasts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Located 29 miles south of Lake Tahoe and 32 miles west of Carson City, NV, nestled in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest near Grover Hot Springs, sits the\u00a0Turtle Rock Park Campground<\/a>.\u00a0In recent years, Turtle Rock Park has served as the starting point for several cycling races, including a grueling 103-mile course.<\/p>\n

Just days before hundreds of elite cyclists were to descend on Turtle Rock Park for the start of the ride, on July 4, 2021, the campground found itself in the path of the lightening-sparked\u00a0Tamarack Fire<\/a>.\u00a0The fire, which\u00a0raged out of control for weeks in the rugged mountains straddling the California-Nevada border,\u00a0ended up burning over 68,000 acres.<\/p>\n

An important part of the recovery efforts was the preservation of the park\u2019s unique cultural and environmental resources. To ensure these areas were untouched or had minimal impact during hazardous tree removal, state officials spent weeks putting protective measures in place.<\/p>\n

Some metal and concrete waste from the park was recycled, helping to save limited landfill space and allowing for the material to be beneficially reused.<\/p>\n

The final piece of debris removal operations kicked off on March 28, 2022, with the identification and removal of hazardous trees left behind in the wake of the Tamarack Fire.\u00a0As part of Cal OES\u2019 comprehensive recovery efforts, crews removed a total of\u00a03,751 hazardous trees<\/strong>\u00a0in Turtle Rock Park, ultimately wrapping up tree felling and cleanup efforts on May 25, 2022.<\/p>\n

Once state-managed debris removal operations reached completion, Turtle Rock Park was turned back over to Alpine County to handle the final sign-off and reopening.<\/p>\n

The return of Turtle Rock Park to the county marks the end of the state\u2019s debris removal efforts in Alpine County.\u00a0 All four participating properties in the county have now been returned to local officials.<\/p>\n
