Hours later, body bags lay spread on the ground near the trailer as a grim symbol of the calamity.<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the 46 who died had \u201cfamilies who were likely trying to find a better life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,\u201d Nirenberg said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s among the deadliest tragedies to have claimed thousands of lives of people attempting to cross the U.S. border from Mexico in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fe5ca6ab0db546f38fe9b328cab2bcfb\">Ten migrants died in 2017<\/a>\u00a0after being trapped inside a truck that was parked at a Walmart in San Antonio.
