<\/p>\nSan Andreas, CA…The excessive heat warning issued by the U.S. National Weather Service has been extended until 8pm on Friday, September 9th. As dangerously hot conditions continue this week, Calaveras County Public Health reminds everyone to stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay informed.<\/p>\n

County officials urge people to guard against heat-related illness: \u25cf Drink plenty of fluids \u25cf Stay in an air-conditioned room \u25cf Stay out of the sun \u25cf Check up on relatives and neighbors \u25cf Do not leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. \u25cf Limit outdoor activities to early morning or evening. \u25cf Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. \u25cf Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. \u25cf <\/p>\n
If you are working outdoors, take breaks often in shaded or air conditioned areas.
\nAnyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911 for immediate help.<\/p>\n
The public is encouraged to utilize county buildings including libraries, community spaces, and private businesses such as coffee shops or grocery stores to stay cool. The San Andreas Library located at 1299 Gold Hunter Road, San Andreas, will extend their hours until 8pm this week for anyone looking to escape the heat. For other library branch hours of operation in your area, please visit the county website. The West Point Community Hall will also be hosting a cooling center on Tuesday, September 6. People are also welcome to cool off at all county libraries during normal hours of operation. For library branch hours of operation in your area, please visit the county website. Cooling centers will comply with COVID-19 guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Face coverings will be required.<\/p>\n
People who need transportation are encouraged to contact Calaveras Connect. Public transportation will be provided at no-cost to and from San Andreas. For assistance with transportation, call Calaveras Connect at (209) 754-4450.<\/p>\n
Calaveras County Animal Services has also extended the cooling center for cats and dogs between September 6-9 from 11am-5pm. Overnight sheltering capabilities are available for those in need. The shelter will be located at the Friends of the Calaveras Animal Services (FOCAS) building at 901 Jeff Tuttle Drive, San Andreas, CA 95249. Please confirm availability before arriving by calling the Animal Services emergency contact number at (209) 754 \u2013 6866.<\/p>\n
Calaveras Public Health urges people to continue to remain vigilant about the prevention of COVID-19 transmission during excessive heat. The best ways to avoid exposure to the virus are to:
\n\uf0b7 Maintain physical distancing, ideally at least 6 feet between individuals
\n\uf0b7 Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
\n\uf0b7 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
\n\uf0b7 Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth when around others
\n\uf0b7 Get tested for COVID-19 if you develop any symptoms of COVID-19
\n\uf0b7 Get vaccinated for COVID-19<\/p>\n
