Baby Bass<\/strong><\/div>\n
Every spring the bass move into shallow water and spawn.\u00a0 They lay millions of eggs with the hope that some will hatch and grow to be adult fish.<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
Small crankbaits work well and resemble baby bass swimming through the shallow water.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A very small population will reach full growth.\u00a0 Once the eggs hatch and become small fish (often referred to as bass fry) they will school with each other to increase their survival rate.\u00a0 At this stage they will feed on small aquatic organisms.<\/div>\n

Bass are triggered by many things, color is one of them. \u00a0A baby bass colored Senko is green with gold and black flake.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Not all bass will spawn at the same time so there will be bass fry at different stages in the growth cycle throughout the summer months.\u00a0 These small bass are a primary food source for many creatures including birds, turtles and most importantly other fish.<\/div>\n

A baby baby colored C.R.L. swim jig works well around heavy cover because it has weed gaurd and won’t hang up much.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Small schools of fry will hunker in the brush and around trees and laydowns. \u00a0Cover offers protection from predators.<\/div>\n

A walk the dog style bait will represent a baby bass feeding on the surface on small aquatic insects.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Bass will try to eat anything their size and smaller.\u00a0 They are cannibals, very aggressive and will eat their young.\u00a0 \u00a0For example, a 10″ bass will easily eat a 3″ bass, and a 3-pound bass can easily eat a 10″ bass.<\/div>\n

Fishing Report<\/strong><\/div>\n

Water Conditions<\/strong>:\u00a0 New Melones Lake is currently holding<\/div>\n
780,151 acre-feet of water.\u00a0 The lake level dropped a little over two feet this week and is currently at 910 ft. above sea level and 175 ft. from full.\u00a0 The water is stained in most areas of the lake, and fairly clear in others.\u00a0 There are mud lines forming near the shore throughout the day, especially on windy days. The average water temperature is 72-78 degrees and rising daily.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Glory Hole Sports employee Sherryl Van Sanden caught and released a gorgoues brown trout on a spinner out of the Mokelumne River.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Trout:<\/strong>\u00a0Fair.\u00a0\u00a0Night fishing<\/strong>\u00a0for trout has been good.\u00a0 Most anglers fishing under submersible lights are catching limits of chunky 2-pound rainbows.\u00a0 Nightcrawlers and Power Bait are working well.\u00a0 The trout will school in deeper\/cooler water during the hot summer heat and move into shallow water at night to feed.\u00a0 It is a good idea to anchor in 40-60′ of water that is near 100-200′ areas.\u00a0 Drop your light 10-20′ down and fish your presentations below that.\u00a0Trolling anglers<\/strong>\u00a0have been doing better each week and bringing in a handful of nice trout along with their kokanee.\u00a0 The trout are drawn to deeper\/cooler water.\u00a0 The main river channel will have the coolest water throughout the summer.\u00a0 Try trolling in 30-50′ of water at 2.5-3.0 mph.\u00a0 The shad are schooled up and are a primary food source for trout.\u00a0 Try using baits that best resemble the natural forage.\u00a0 The water is a bit stained so in would be a good idea to include some bright colors in your presentation.\u00a0 Try using bright blades along with natural patterned baits, or natural blades along with brighter baits.<\/div>\n

Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week goes to Don Myshrall of Mokelumne Hill.\u00a0 He caught a 1-pound, 6-ounce rainbow while trolling for kokanee. Don and his friend Jeff Kelley caught two limits with an orange hoochie in 45′ of water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
Bank fishing<\/strong>\u00a0for trout has been very slow.\u00a0 Trout season is open for rivers, and streams, it might be best to try your luck in these areas. If you do choose to target trout from the bank try using chartreuse or rainbow garlic Power Bait. \u00a0Fly fishing anglers<\/strong>\u00a0try fishing nymphs under an indicator during the day and switching to mayfly patterns during the evening.\u00a0 Also, try using buggers and streamers in the high country lakes.<\/div>\n

We do encourage catch and release for the brown trout as The Department of Fish and Game will no longer be planting them.\u00a0 Carefully measure, weigh and photograph trophy fish and send us pictures and information<\/strong>.<\/div>\n

Jim and Jim Hann caught two mixed limits of kokanee and rainbows.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Kokanee:<\/strong>\u00a0Good. Each week we are seeing and hearing of some nice kokanee being caught. The average size is 11-13″ with a few fish measuring 14-16″.\u00a0 The fish are schooling in deep water off of Glory Hole Point and near the dam, spillway and Rose Island. A variety of colors are producing limits.\u00a0 Pink is always a good choice with orange and chartreuse bringing in limits as well.\u00a0 The water has a green tint so it is best to use dodgers that have a high reflective quality.\u00a0 Gold and copper are good choice when trolling in stained water.\u00a0 Fish will be keying on baits that disperse water and create vibration.\u00a0 Try using spinners, Apex and bladed hoochies.\u00a0 It is also a good idea to modify your dodgers by adding a little bend to them.\u00a0 This modification will give the blade and bait more side-to side swing.\u00a0 Scent is very important when fishing in water with less visibility.\u00a0 Garlic, bloody tuna, anise, and kokanee special will work.\u00a0 Don’t forget to tip your presentations with dyed and scent shoepeg corn.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Bass<\/strong>: \u00a0Fair.\u00a0 The bass are done spawning and moving out into deeper water where they will spend the summer.\u00a0 They will move shallow at night and in the morning for a short period of time to feed.\u00a0 Then they will head back to cool water for the hot hours of the day.\u00a0 Try using reaction baits in the cooler hours of the day and switching slower moving baits during the heat.\u00a0 A great presentation that works at all depths is a Carolina Rig.\u00a0 Try using a soft plastic lizard or brush hog and keep contact with the bottom.\u00a0 Another rig that catches fish especially in stained water is a Texas Rig worm with a “brass and glass” weight and bead.\u00a0 With this presentation your can create a Ticking noise by shaking the tip of the rod.\u00a0 This will attract fish from a distance. If you can find balls of shad try dropping a shad patterned worm or a small swim bait down to them.<\/div>\n

Casey Strom of Pleasanton caught and released a nice spotted bass. \u00a0This fish took a Zara Spook in the morning hours.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Please practice catch and release. Take photos and carefully release the fish back into to the lake to maintain a healthy fish population for generations to come.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Catfish:<\/strong>\u00a0Very Good.\u00a0 The big cats are up in shallow water and feeding heavily.\u00a0 The water temperature is getting warmer each day which has encouraged the cats to move shallow.\u00a0 Try using frozen shad or a ball of crawlers to target these fish.\u00a0 Catfish are drawn to bait by scent so it is a good idea to add additional scent to your bait.<\/div>\n

Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week goes to Chris Limas and his two daughters Brooke and Christy.\u00a0 They caught two chunky cats, the biggest one weighed 12-pounds, 5-ounces.\u00a0 They caught these fish midday using shad and crawlers for bait.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Crappie:<\/strong>\u00a0Slow.\u00a0 The crappie have been hard to find, try your luck at night fishing under a submersible light.<\/div>\n

The kokanee are biting and we have been putting limits in the boat on every trip.\u00a0 It might take a few hours to catch them, but if you put in the time and cover water you will catch fish. The best bite time has been mid-morning and we have been locating schools just outside of the spillway.\u00a0 The fish are anywhere from 38-50′ deep.\u00a0 Pink and orange are working best.\u00a0 Uncle Larry’s Spinners, Glitter Bugs Micro Hoochies, and Simon Baby Wobblers are catching them good.\u00a0 The Pink Thunder Rocky Mountain blade and the Glitter Bugs chrome teardrop have been hot.\u00a0 Add a slight bend to your dodgers.\u00a0 Garlic and shrimp\/krill corn has been working well.<\/div>\n

Friday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0morning I met one of my fellow Glory Hole Sports employees and friend Josh Hutton at the Glory Hole boat launch at5:15<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the morning.\u00a0 We started the day throwing top water baits in hopes to get some explosive bites.\u00a0 Our first couple stops we came up empty handed with quite a few fish swiping at our baits and not hooking up.\u00a0 We caught a few fish on crankbaits and jigs but stuck to the game plan and kept throwing top water.\u00a0 We ended up landing a handful of nice fish and few small ones on the surface and had two or three really nice fish that just missed our plugs.\u00a0 We then switch to soft plastics and caught a bunch of fish.<\/div>\n

We landed fish up to four pounds and Josh hauled in a beautiful three pound spotted bass. \u00a0The lake was calm and the bass were eager to bite, it was a good day on the water.<\/div>\n
