Multiple wildlife have tested positive for rabies in 2016. In February 2016, a dog tested positive for rabies after contact with a skunk. The dog did not have current vaccination to provide protection from the rabies virus. Due to contact with this animal, multiple people are being treated with post-exposure prophylaxis as a preventative measure.  These individuals have NOT tested positive for rabies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/amadorpubh.jpg\" alt=\"amadorpubh\" width=\"320\" height=\"212\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/amadorpubh.jpg 320w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/amadorpubh-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRabies vaccinations and awareness are the best defense,\u201d states Kelly Reason, Amador County<br \/>\nAnimal Control Director. \u201cOwners need to remember the importance of having their pets vaccinated and<br \/>\nto follow-up with required boosters as recommended by their veterinarian to keep their pets and families<br \/>\nsafe.\u201d Indoor animals should also receive this vaccine as bats can be discovered by pets in the home.<br \/>\nIn addition to vaccination, there are several things Amador residents can do to protect themselves and<br \/>\ntheir pets:<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Avoid contact with wildlife and animals you do not know. If you or your pets have contact with<br \/>\nwildlife, contact Animal Control.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 If you are bitten:<br \/>\no Wash the bite thoroughly with soap and water.<br \/>\no Seek medical attention.<br \/>\no Contact Amador County Animal Control, so the wildlife can be tested.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Contact Animal Control and your veterinarian if your pet was exposed to a skunk, bat, raccoon<br \/>\nor other wildlife.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 If a bat is inside your home, do NOT let it out. Contact Animal Control for testing.<br \/>\nRabies is a deadly disease that kills both animals and humans. The rabies virus is almost always fatal.<br \/>\nThe only treatment is prevention. In California, bats, skunks, raccoons and foxes are the most frequent<br \/>\ncarriers of rabies.
