We\u2019ve been in many, many meetings together, but it\u2019s good to have you here in the Oval Office.  And you\u2019re welcome despite \u2014 despite the World Cup match.  PRIME MINISTER RUTTE:  Yeah, sorry.  (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g2ja5p6uad8\" title=\"President Biden Holds a Bilateral Meeting with Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>PRESIDENT BIDEN:  And in spite of that, you know, you\u2019re one of our strongest allies and personal friends, and you\u2019ve been a great, great personal ally as well. <\/p>\n<p>And together, we\u2019re stepping up our protection for democratic values across the world.  And we\u2019re \u2014 you know, including standing strong with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>PRIME MINISTER RUTTE:  Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>PRESIDENT BIDEN:  And you\u2019ve been very, very stalwart.  And we look to you as well to make sure we have a coherent European response \u2014 all Europe \u2014 in response to Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>And Russia is just continuing to act in ways that are almost unbelievable \u2014 the brutality with which they\u2019re acting. <\/p>\n<p>Together, we\u2019re promoting human rights and the rule of law, and we\u2019ll be co-hosting the next summit on the \u2014 the Summit of Democracies in March, which we\u2019ll be together again.  And there\u2019s a lot that we have to work on together. <\/p>\n<p>And together, we\u2019re working on how to keep a free and open Indo-Pacific and, quite frankly, meet the challenges of China.  Simply put, our companies \u2014 our countries have been, so far, in just lockstep in what we\u2019ve done and our vision for the future.<\/p>\n<p>And so, today, I look forward to discussing how we can further deepen our relationship and securing our supply chains to strengthen our transatlantic partnership. <\/p>\n<p>And thank you again, Mr. Minister.  We\u2019ve had a great relationship with both our countries and personally.  And I look forward to discussing a lot more in detail. <\/p>\n<p>PRIME MINISTER RUTTE:  Thank you.  Thank you so much.  And also, thank you for hosting me.  It\u2019s the first time in my \u2014<\/p>\n<p>PRESIDENT BIDEN:  The fire.<\/p>\n<p>PRIME MINISTER RUTTE:  \u2014 five visits that the fireplace \u2014<\/p>\n<p>PRESIDENT BIDEN:  That\u2019s right.  The fireplace. <\/p>\n<p>PRIME MINISTER RUTTE:  \u2014 is on.<\/p>\n<p>And typically, I would start with the economy.  And then I would have told the press that we are the second biggest investor in the U.S, and the United States is the biggest investor in Europe. <\/p>\n<p>But I think we should talk Ukraine.  And we have seen this terrible footage coming out of Dnipro this weekend, where innocent children, men, and women, again, were under rocket fire, and this apartment building was hit and many people died.  These are horrible pictures.  And I think it \u2014 it strengthens even more our resolve to stay with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>And I want to commend you personally and the United States for your leadership.  I\u2019m convinced that history will judge that in 2022, if the United States would not have stepped up like you did, that things would have been very different at the moment in this \u2014 in the fight between Ukraine and Russian aggression.<\/p>\n<p>And we have decided to spend another two and a half billion on \u2014<\/p>\n<p>PRESIDENT BIDEN:  Yes.<\/p>\n<p>PRIME MINISTER RUTTE:  \u2014 helping the Ukraine war effort.  If you compare this to the size of America, it would be over $50 billion \u2014 $50 billion.<\/p>\n<p>We have the intention to join what you are doing with Germany on the Patriots project, so the air defense system.  I think that is important that we join that.  I discussed it also, this morning, with Olaf Scholz of Germany.<\/p>\n<p>And then, on accountability, we can never accept that Putin and Russia get away with this.  So, accountability to take them to court to make sure that this all gets done in \u2014 also in a legal way is crucial.  And I know that you and I are working on this.<\/p>\n<p>But again, your leadership \u2014 United States, you personally \u2014 has been crucial.  So, again, I want to thank you for that.  And let\u2019s stay closely together this year.  And, hopefully, things will move \u2014 yeah \u2014 forward in a way which is acceptable for Ukraine.  They have done so much.  And this year will be important.<\/p>\n<p>So, again, thank you.<\/p>\n<p>PRESIDENT BIDEN:  They have.  And one of the things \u2014 if I could just add very quickly: Europe continues to step up, respond to Russian actions.  There\u2019s more to do, and we \u2014 we have to stay together.  And it\u2019s been \u2014 been really, really, really important that you\u2019ve been there every single step of the way.  So, thank you.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you.<\/p>\n<p>11:43 A.M.
