{"id":154787,"date":"2023-01-26T16:50:05","date_gmt":"2023-01-27T00:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/?p=154787"},"modified":"2023-01-26T16:50:05","modified_gmt":"2023-01-27T00:50:05","slug":"state-water-project-to-increase-expected-2023-deliveries-to-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/?p=154787","title":{"rendered":"State Water Project to Increase Expected 2023 Deliveries to 30%"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Sacramento, CA&#8230;Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement today after the state announced that\u00a0it\u00a0will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/water.ca.gov\/News\/News-Releases\/2023\/Jan-23\/Recent-Storms-Allow-State-Water-Project-to-Increase-Expected-2023-Deliveries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"0\">boost deliveries to 29 public water agencies serving 27 million Californians<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cThanks to the water captured and stored from recent storms, the state is increasing deliveries to local agencies that support two-thirds of Californians \u2013 good news for communities and farms in the Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley and Southern California,\u201d said Governor Newsom. \u201cWe\u2019ll keep pushing to modernize our water infrastructure to take advantage of these winter storms and prepare communities for the climate-driven extremes of wet and dry ahead.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/precipitation-graph.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-154788\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/precipitation-graph.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/precipitation-graph.webp 1024w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/precipitation-graph-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/precipitation-graph-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/precipitation-graph-123x70.webp 123w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/precipitation-graph-570x320.webp 570w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/precipitation-graph-701x394.webp 701w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Following atmospheric rivers and extreme weather\u00a0that helped fill reservoirs and dramatically increase the Sierra Nevada snowpack, the Department of Water Resources\u00a0now expects to deliver 30% of requested water supplies \u2013 or 1.27 million acre-feet \u2013 in 2023, up from the initial 5%\u00a0announced on December 1.<\/li>\n<li>The State Water Project\u2019s two largest reservoirs (Oroville and San Luis) have gained a combined 1.62 million acre-feet of water in storage \u2013\u00a0roughly enough to provide water to 5.6 million households for a year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With an above-average snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains, the state is cautiously optimistic that by early summer, there will be enough water stored in our reservoirs and aquifers to help relieve the worst effects of drought. While recent storms have been impressive, two months remain in the wet season and California could see a return to warm and dry conditions.\u00a0Difficult conditions still exist in the Colorado River watershed, and many Californians rely on groundwater wells, which take much longer to recover from drought. \u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>DWR will conduct snow surveys on February 1, March 1, April 1, and May 1 and may further update the allocation as the water supply outlook becomes clearer with the new data.<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>California traditionally receives half its rain and snow by the end of January. Water managers will reassess conditions monthly throughout the winter and spring.
