Annual versions were published from 1733 to 1758 &#038; outsold everything but the bible.  For two generations before the Revolutionary war he helped create our unique heritage and identity.  In this crazy time where the news headlines read like satire we thought it might be refreshing to head down history lane a bit. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/250px-Poor_Richard_Almanack_1739.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"395\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-163956\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/250px-Poor_Richard_Almanack_1739.jpg 250w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/250px-Poor_Richard_Almanack_1739-190x300.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You cannot pluck roses without fear of thorns, Nor enjoy fair wife without danger of horns.<br \/>\nWithout justice, courage is weak.<br \/>\nWould you live with ease, Do what you ought, not what you please.<br \/>\nTake this remark from Richard poor and lame, Whate&#8217;er&#8217;s begun in anger ends in shame.<br \/>\nWhat one relishes, nourishes.<br \/>\nNo man e&#8217;er was glorious, who was not laborious.<br \/>\nAll things are easy to Industry, All things difficult to Sloth.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t think to hunt two hares with one dog.<br \/>\nFools multiply folly.<br \/>\nBeauty &#038; Folly are old companions.<br \/>\nBetter slip with foot than tongue.<br \/>\nHope of gain, lessens pain.<br \/>\nGrief often treads upon the Heels of Pleasure,<br \/>\nMarry\u2019d in Haste, we oft repent at Leisure; Some by Experience find these Words misplac\u2019d, Marry\u2019d at Leisure, they repent in Haste.<br \/>\nWhere there&#8217;s Marriage without Love, there will be Love without Marriage.<br \/>\nBe neither silly, nor cunning, but wise.<br \/>\nNeither a Fortress nor a Maidenhead will hold out long after they begin to parly.<br \/>\nWho pleasure gives, Shall joy receive.<br \/>\nAll things are cheap to the saving, dear to the wasteful.<br \/>\nWould you persuade, speak of Interest, not of Reason.<br \/>\nHappy&#8217;s the Wooing that&#8217;s not long a doing.<br \/>\nJack Little sow&#8217;d little, &#038; little he&#8217;ll reap.<br \/>\nDo good to thy Friend to keep him, to thy enemy to gain him.<br \/>\nA good Man is seldom uneasy, an ill one never easie.<br \/>\nTeach your child to hold his tongue, he&#8217;ll learn fast enough to speak.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t value a man for the Quality he is of, but for the Qualities he possesses.<br \/>\nAs Charms are nonsense, Nonsense is a Charm.<br \/>\nHe that cannot obey, cannot command.<br \/>\nAn innocent Plowman is more worthy than a vicious Prince.<br \/>\nHe that is rich need not live sparingly,<br \/>\nand he that can live sparingly need not be rich.<br \/>\nIf you wou&#8217;d be reveng&#8217;d of your enemy, govern your self.<br \/>\nA wicked Hero will turn his back to an innocent coward.<br \/>\nLaws like to Cobwebs catch small Flies,<br \/>\nGreat one break thro&#8217; before your eyes.<br \/>\nAn Egg to day is better than a Hen to-morrow.<br \/>\nDrink Water, Put the Money in your Pocket, and leave the Dry-bellyach in the Punchbowl.<br \/>\nWhen &#8217;tis fair be sure to take your Great coat with you.<br \/>\nHe does not possess Wealth, it possesses him.<br \/>\nNecessity has no Law; I know some Attorneys of the name.<br \/>\nOnions can make, ev&#8217;n Heirs and Widows weep.<br \/>\nStrange, that he who lives by Shifts, can seldom shift himself.<br \/>\nAs sore places meet most rubs, proud folks meet most affronts.<br \/>\nThe thrifty maxim of the wary Dutch, is to save all the Money they can touch.<br \/>\nHe that waits upon Fortune, is never sure of a Dinner.<br \/>\nA learned blockhead is a greater blockhead than an ignorant one.<br \/>\nMarry your Son when you will, but your Daughter when you can.<br \/>\nAvarice and Happiness never saw each other, how then shou&#8217;d they become acquainted.<br \/>\nIf you woul&#8217;d have Guests merry with your cheer, Be so your self, or so at least appear.<br \/>\nReader, farewell, all Happiness attend thee: May each New Year better and richer find thee.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Philadelphia, PA&#8230;Poor Richard&#8217;s Almanack was published by Benjamin Franklin, under the pen name of &#8220;Poor Richard&#8221; or &#8220;Richard Saunders&#8221;.
