San Andreas, CA…The Calaveras County Public Health Communicable Disease Program has confirmed one human case of West Nile Virus (WNV). This is the first case reported in Calaveras County in 2023.\u00a0 \u201cThe most important aspect of West Nile virus is prevention and awareness. Any possible mosquito reservoirs, carrying infection must be eliminated,\u201d said Dr. Ren\u00e9 Ramirez, Health Officer. “The best way to avoid West Nile Virus infection is to take precautionary measures to avoid mosquito bites.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are many methods of mosquito prevention and control that community members can use to decrease the risk of getting bitten and reduce the chances of contracting a mosquito-borne illnesses, such as West Nile Virus:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

1. Emptying all standing water on your property to reduce areas in which mosquitoes may breed, including flowerpots and pet bowls<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
2. Making sure your window and door screens are in good condition<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
3. Using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or products containing IR3535, always following label directions<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
4. Limiting outdoor activity at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
5. Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Keep your home safe by eliminating any standing water in the nearby area. Environmental Management Administrator, Lisa Medina, adds, \u201cProtect yourselves against mosquitoes by using effective repellant and wearing loose long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors at dusk and dawn.\u201d<\/div>\n
