Growing up in Wimberley, Texas, she began singing in early childhood. Receiving a <strong>mandolin<\/strong> for Christmas when she was nine years old, she worked tirelessly to master the instrument, and learned to play guitar and clawhammer banjo along the way. When she was <strong>11<\/strong>, she performed at her first bluegrass festival; over the next few years, she gained an impressive reputation as a young phenom on the festival circuit, absorbing a world of traditional influences while honing her own highly <strong>original<\/strong> songwriting sensibility.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From an early age, I&#8217;ve had a strong desire to create music,&#8221; Jarosz states. &#8220;I was also <strong>fortunate<\/strong> to be surrounded by older, accomplished musicians who were my mentors. From the very beginning, all of my heroes looked out for me and challenged me in the best ways. It was great being raised in music that way. You might recognize the McMurtry name as belonging to the award-winning novelist and writer Larry, of Lonsesome Dove and Brokeback Mountain fame. Well, this isn&#8217;t Larry, it&#8217;s James. And while James never wanted to be a writer &#8211;\u00a0\u201cI wanted to be Johnny Cash from the minute I heard his voice\u201d &#8211; he is every bit as talented a musician as his father is a talented writer.<\/p>\n<p>McMurtry critically lauded first album <strong>Too Long in the Wasteland<\/strong>(1989) was produced by John Mellencamp and marked the beginning of a series of acclaimed projects for Columbia and Sugar Hill Records. In 1996, McMurtry received a <strong>Grammy<\/strong> nomination for Long Form Music Video for Where&#8217;d You Hide the Body. Additionally, It Had to Happen (1997) received the American Indie Award for<strong>Best Americana Album<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, McMurtry released the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records. The following year, Childish Things notched arguably his most critical praise, spending six weeks at No. 1 on the Americana Music Radio Chart in 2005 and 2006. In September 2006, Childish Things and \u201cWe Can\u2019t Make It Here\u201d won the Americana Music Awards for <strong>Album and Song of the Year<\/strong>, respectively. McMurtry received more Americana Music Award nominations for 2008\u2019s Just Us Kids. This album marked his highest Billboard 200 chart position in more than nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJames writes like he&#8217;s lived a lifetime,\u201d &#8211; John Mellencamp<\/p>\n<p><em>Our winemaker Mark, who normally is a very reserved sort of guy, just about lost it when he heard James was going to be performing at Twisted Oak &#8211; Mark is a HUGE fan. The band can claim the <strong>three largest selling<\/strong> Zydeco albums of all time. No other Zydeco artist has come close to selling as many records or<strong>exposing<\/strong> the music to more people around the world. Bringing the unique sound of Zydeco into the musical mainstream, Buckwheat Zydeco released the <strong>first-ever<\/strong> major label Zydeco album in 1987: Island Records\u2019\u00a0 \u201cOn A Night Like This.\u201d In fact, Jimmy Fallon asked Buckwheat Zydeco to play that title tune with him and the Roots to kick off his final Late Night show before taking over the Tonight Show.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of Buckwheat Zydeco\u2019s career, Buck has gigged with everyone from Eric Clapton (with whom Buckwheat also recorded) and U2 to The Boston Pops. The band performed at the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics to a worldwide audience of three billion people. More national television appearances include PBS\u2019s tribute to Paul Simon, where Buck performed with Lyle Lovett; and sitting in with Paul on The Late Show With David Letterman (and playing \u201cHot Tamale Baby\u201d for Martha Stewart). She was the 2013 Female Vocalist of the <strong>Year<\/strong>for the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and a 2012 recipient of the United States Artists Walker Fellowship.
