This \u00a0June \u00a0and \u00a0July, \u00a0California \u00a0teachers \u00a0will \u00a0gather \u00a0at \u00a0four \u00a0locations \u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0state\u2019s \u00a0northern forests \u00a0to \u00a0participate \u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0Forestry \u00a0Institute \u00a0for \u00a0Teachers \u00a0(FIT) \u00a0program. \u00a0These \u00a0week-\u00ad\u2010long \u00a0in-\u00ad\u2010residence \u00a0field \u00a0workshops \u00a0focus \u00a0on \u00a0forest \u00a0ecology, \u00a0forest \u00a0management, \u00a0environmental education \u00a0and \u00a0curriculum \u00a0development.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thepinetree.net\/images\/announce\/1417627404.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0participating \u00a0teachers \u00a0are \u00a0leaders \u00a0in \u00a0their \u00a0profession,\u201d \u00a0said \u00a0University \u00a0of \u00a0California<br \/>\nCooperative \u00a0Extension \u00a0Natural \u00a0Resource \u00a0Advisor \u00a0Mike \u00a0De \u00a0Lasaux. \u00a0\u201cThe \u00a0initial \u00a0goal \u00a0of \u00a0the<br \/>\nprogram \u00a0is \u00a0to \u00a0provide \u00a0them \u00a0with \u00a0the \u00a0information \u00a0and \u00a0tools \u00a0to \u00a0teach \u00a0a \u00a0balanced \u00a0environmental<br \/>\neducation \u00a0curriculum \u00a0that \u00a0meets \u00a0Next \u00a0Generation \u00a0Science \u00a0Standards \u00a0and \u00a0Common \u00a0Core<br \/>\ncurriculum \u00a0requirements.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, \u00a0the \u00a0program \u00a0seeks \u00a0to \u00a0create \u00a0an \u00a0informed \u00a0citizenry \u00a0that \u00a0understands \u00a0the \u00a0many<br \/>\nvalues \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0forest \u00a0and \u00a0the \u00a0competing \u00a0demands \u00a0for \u00a0its \u00a0resources. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs \u00a0teachers \u00a0become \u00a0better \u00a0informed, \u00a0they \u00a0share \u00a0their \u00a0findings \u00a0with \u00a0their \u00a0students, \u00a0giving \u00a0them<br \/>\nthe \u00a0skills \u00a0to \u00a0recognize, \u00a0analyze, \u00a0and \u00a0make \u00a0sound \u00a0decisions \u00a0regarding \u00a0environmental \u00a0and \u00a0natural<br \/>\nresource \u00a0management \u00a0issues,\u201d \u00a0De \u00a0Lasaux \u00a0said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Teachers \u00a0meet \u00a0with \u00a0practicing \u00a0resource \u00a0professionals \u00a0from \u00a0nonprofit \u00a0organizations, \u00a0universities,<br \/>\nprivate \u00a0companies, \u00a0and \u00a0government \u00a0agencies, \u00a0who \u00a0present \u00a0college-\u00ad\u2010level \u00a0instruction \u00a0in \u00a0forest<br \/>\nmanagement, \u00a0wildlife \u00a0biology, \u00a0watershed \u00a0management, \u00a0archaeology, \u00a0and \u00a0fire \u00a0science. \u00a0These<br \/>\nlessons \u00a0are \u00a0followed \u00a0by \u00a0field \u00a0trips, \u00a0where \u00a0participants \u00a0see \u00a0natural \u00a0and \u00a0planted \u00a0forests, \u00a0active<br \/>\ntimber \u00a0harvests, \u00a0stream \u00a0restoration \u00a0projects, \u00a0projects \u00a0to \u00a0restore \u00a0forests, \u00a0reduce \u00a0fire \u00a0hazards,<br \/>\nand \u00a0more. <\/p>\n<p>Teachers \u00a0are \u00a0then \u00a0expected \u00a0to \u00a0develop \u00a0a \u00a0forest \u00a0curriculum \u00a0unit \u00a0or \u00a0project, \u00a0which \u00a0they<br \/>\nimplement \u00a0with \u00a0their \u00a0students \u00a0upon \u00a0their \u00a0return \u00a0home. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI \u00a0wasn&#8217;t \u00a0sure \u00a0what \u00a0to \u00a0expect,\u201d \u00a0said \u00a0Andrea \u00a0Brown, \u00a0a \u00a06th-\u00ad\u2010grade \u00a0teacher \u00a0from \u00a0Georgetown, \u00a0CA,<br \/>\nwho \u00a0participated \u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0FIT \u00a0program \u00a0last \u00a0year. \u00a0\u201cWe \u00a0covered \u00a0so \u00a0much \u00a0more \u00a0than \u00a0I \u00a0could \u00a0have<br \/>\nimagined, \u00a0from \u00a0the \u00a0soil, \u00a0trees, \u00a0and \u00a0animals \u00a0to \u00a0the \u00a0people, \u00a0communities, \u00a0and \u00a0businesses \u00a0that \u00a0all<br \/>\ndepend \u00a0on \u00a0a \u00a0forest.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Each \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0four \u00a0sessions \u00a0is \u00a0designed \u00a0to \u00a0host \u00a030 \u00a0teachers. \u00a0Since \u00a01993, \u00a0half \u00a0of \u00a0all \u00a0participants<br \/>\nhave \u00a0come \u00a0from \u00a0southern \u00a0California, \u00a0a \u00a0third \u00a0from \u00a0the \u00a0Bay \u00a0Area \u00a0and \u00a0Sacramento, \u00a0and \u00a016 \u00a0percent<br \/>\nfrom \u00a0the \u00a0rest \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0state. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne \u00a0of \u00a0our \u00a0main \u00a0goals \u00a0has \u00a0always \u00a0been \u00a0to \u00a0bridge \u00a0the \u00a0perception \u00a0gap \u00a0between \u00a0the \u00a0state\u2019s<br \/>\nurban \u00a0and \u00a0rural \u00a0residents,\u201d \u00a0said \u00a0De \u00a0Lasaux. \u00a0\u201cUrban \u00a0residents \u00a0are \u00a0most \u00a0concerned \u00a0about<br \/>\nprotecting \u00a0natural \u00a0resources \u00a0and \u00a0recreational \u00a0opportunities. \u00a0Those \u00a0who \u00a0live \u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0rural \u00a0north,<br \/>\nclosest \u00a0to \u00a0the \u00a0forests, \u00a0greatly \u00a0care \u00a0about \u00a0creating \u00a0resilient \u00a0forests \u00a0capable \u00a0of \u00a0surviving \u00a0wildfire,<br \/>\nproviding \u00a0sustainable \u00a0and \u00a0locally \u00a0grown, \u00a0lumber, \u00a0abundant \u00a0water \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0highest \u00a0quality \u00a0and \u00a0the<br \/>\nrecreational \u00a0destinations \u00a0that \u00a0are \u00a0cherished. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth \u00a0perspectives \u00a0are \u00a0valid,\u201d \u00a0he \u00a0emphasized. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\nThere \u00a0are \u00a0still \u00a0a \u00a0few \u00a0spots \u00a0available \u00a0in
