He didn&#8217;t just help found our country during the 1776 era.\u00a0 \u00a0For two generations before he helped sell concepts of Freedom, Self-Determination &#038; Inalienable rights. From 1733 to 1758 Poor Richards Almanac helped create the unique American identity in a homey, common sense, aspirational way. Folly are old companions.<br \/>\nBetter slip with foot than tongue.<br \/>\nHope of gain,<br \/>\nlessens pain.<br \/>\nWedlock, as old Men note, hath likened been,<br \/>\nUnto a publick Crowd or common Rout;<br \/>\nWhere those that are without would fain get in,<br \/>\nAnd those that are within would fain get out.<br \/>\nGrief often treads upon the Heels of Pleasure,<br \/>\nMarry\u2019d in Haste, we oft repent at Leisure;<br \/>\nSome by Experience find these Words misplac\u2019d,<br \/>\nMarry\u2019d at Leisure, they repent in Haste.<br \/>\nWhere there&#8217;s Marriage without Love,<br \/>\nthere will be Love without Marriage.<br \/>\nBe neither silly, nor cunning, but wise.<br \/>\nNeither a Fortress nor a Maidenhead will hold out long<br \/>\nafter they begin to parly.<br \/>\nWho pleasure gives,<br \/>\nShall joy receive.<br \/>\nAll things are cheap to the saving, dear to the wasteful.<br \/>\nWould you persuade, speak of Interest, not of Reason.<br \/>\nHappy&#8217;s the Wooing that&#8217;s not long a doing.<br \/>\nJack Little sow&#8217;d little, &#038; little he&#8217;ll reap.<br \/>\nDo good to thy Friend to keep him,<br \/>\nto thy enemy to gain him.<br \/>\nA good Man is seldom uneasy, an ill one never easie.<br \/>\nTeach your child to hold his tongue,<br \/>\nhe&#8217;ll learn fast enough to speak.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t value a man for the Quality he is of,<br \/>\nbut for the Qualities he possesses.<br \/>\nAs Charms are nonsense, Nonsense is a Charm.<br \/>\nHe that cannot obey, cannot command.<br \/>\nAn innocent Plowman is more worthy than a vicious Prince.<br \/>\nHe that is rich need not live sparingly,<br \/>\nand he that can live sparingly need not be rich.<br \/>\nIf you wou&#8217;d be reveng&#8217;d of your enemy, govern your self.<br \/>\nA wicked Hero will turn his back to an innocent coward.<br \/>\nLaws like to Cobwebs catch small Flies,<br \/>\nGreat one break thro&#8217;
