With reported hate crimes\u00a0having risen sharply across the country<\/a>\u00a0in recent years, California continues to lead by investing in cutting-edge programs to empower the state\u2019s diverse communities and take a stand against hate and discrimination.\u201cIn California, we\u2019re coming together in solidarity to say no to the division and hate. From United Against Hate Week to cutting-edge anti-hate programs, we\u2019re leading the nation in the fight against hate. We\u2019re not going back and we\u2019re not giving up. We\u2019re committed to a California for all.\u201d<\/p>\n Governor\u00a0Gavin NewsomFrom the\u00a0first-ever statewide hotline<\/a>\u00a0to report acts of hate and get support, to\u00a0millions of dollars in grants<\/a>\u00a0to protect nonprofits and places of worship, California has taken a comprehensive approach to combat the rise in reported hate crimes and discrimination in recent years.<\/p>\n CA vs Hate<\/p>\n In 2023, Governor Newsom launched\u00a0CA vs Hate<\/a>, California\u2019s first-ever multilingual statewide hotline and resource network that provides a safe, anonymous reporting option for victims and witnesses of hate. Whether people\u00a0report to CA vs Hate<\/a>\u00a0online or by phone, they are eligible to receive free care coordination to ensure they can access resources and support, including legal, financial, mental health, and mediation services.<\/p>\n In the program\u2019s first full year,\u00a0more than 1,000 people<\/a>\u00a0have reported across nearly 80% of California\u2019s counties. You can call and get support at 833-8-NO-HATE or by going to\u00a0CAvsHate.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n Targeted grant programs<\/p>\n Last year, after heightened fear of violence due to conflicts in the Middle East and the troubling trend of hate-fueled attacks across the country,\u00a0Governor Newsom increased funding for the nonprofit security grant program<\/a>\u00a0by over 35%, providing $78 million for nonprofits to improve safety and security.<\/p>\n These targeted grants are part of a broader strategy to enhance the state\u2019s response to hate, including through the\u00a0Stop the Hate grant program<\/a>\u00a0that supports the ability of community organizations to provide direct services to people impacted by hate and\u00a0Ethnic Media Outreach grants<\/a>\u00a0to help ensure those often most frequently targeted for hate have in-language, culturally-competent information about the resources available to them.<\/p>\n Community conflict mediation<\/p>\n California is one of the only states in the nation with a team of mediators to directly engage communities and local leaders to manage and constructively resolve conflict related to hate and discrimination. Often working behind the scenes to facilitate dialog, provide training, and design conflict resolution processes, California\u2019s\u00a0trained, neutral mediators<\/a>\u00a0help minimize the potential for hate-motivated violence. Their work runs in parallel to the individualized CA vs Hate hotline services available statewide and offers an important tool to support community-wide resolutions.<\/p>\n Bringing together experts<\/p>\n California is committed to bringing communities together to adequately understand the scope of hate and address it. In 2021, Governor Newsom signed legislation establishing the\u00a0California Commission on the State of Hate<\/a>\u00a0to monitor and track hate and recommend policy to the Governor and Legislature. In 2023, Governor Newsom signed legislation requiring state and local law enforcement agencies to adopt a hate crime policy. From\u00a0holding public community forums<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0issuing reports advancing the study of hate<\/a>, the Commission is carrying forward the state\u2019s commitment to being responsive to its communities and complements ongoing work by the\u00a0Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education<\/a>\u00a0to help curb the risk of violent extremism.<\/p>\n About United Against Hate Week<\/p>\n UAHW is a call for local civic action to put a stop to the hate, discrimination, and implicit biases that negatively impact our diverse communities, neighborhoods, and cities. The week, which\u00a0began in California and has since spread to cities across the country<\/a>, was initially created by local government and community leaders in response to white supremacist rallies in Berkeley and San Francisco. Through local events, sharing stories, holding rallies, and connecting with local institutions, UAHW, which runs from September 21 to September 27, is about working together to help combat a national and statewide increase in reports of hate.<\/p>\n
