Murphys Historic Hotel<\/p>\n

Haunted Calaveras:\u00a0Murphys Historic Hotel<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Murphys Historic Hotel<\/a>, which has been in continuous operation since 1856 and hosted well-known historical figures like Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, Susan B. Anthony, and even Charles Bolton (a.k.a. Black Bart), has another longtime guest that doesn\u2019t seem to be leaving anytime soon\u2014the ghost of Eleanor.\u00a0 A former maid at the hotel in the early 1860s, Eleanor most frequently haunts the kitchen and Mark Twain Ballroom by throwing things.\u00a0 \u00a0Eleanor may not be alone though.\u00a0 Hotel staff and guests have also reported hearing children laughing, as well as seeing a gentleman ghost, which the staff refers to as John. \u00a0You might not want to read the guest log in your room before bed unless you want to see what encounters previous guests have experienced in the room you\u2019re staying in.\u00a0 For more on the Murphys Hotel\u2019s haunted history, including a creepy recording taken by the American Paranormal Research Association at the hotel, check out this article from Forbes.com:\u00a0\u201cI Slept with Mark Twain\u2019s Ghost.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0Visit:\u00a0457 Main Street, Murphys, CA<\/p>\n

Haunted Calaveras: Hotel L\u00e9ger<\/p>\n

One of the most talked about haunted locations in the county has to be\u00a0Hotel Leger<\/a>\u00a0in Mokelumne Hill, which has had reports of at least three ghostly figures, spotted on numerous occasions by visitors and staff over the years.\u00a0 The ghost of George Leger, who was assassinated in the hotel in 1879, has allegedly been seen wandering the saloon and many of the hotel\u2019s rooms. Other sightings have included a woman crying for her child and a child playing. Guests have also reported odd occurrences with fireplaces in their rooms, moved shoes, and a former owner\u00a0of the Hotel L\u00e9ger has even described seeing smoke and fire in the bar area multiple times when no fire was present. Haunted Calaveras: Dorrington Hotel<\/p>\n

The Dorrington Hotel closed for years, is now a beautifully restored inn used for groups\u2013which may have pleased the ghost of Rebecca Dorrington Gardner who is said to walk the halls of the more than 160-year-old historic hotel\u00a0that was completely closed for many years.\u00a0 Whether it was lights flashing on and off, shadowy figures being seen or furniture being moved, Rebecca\u2019s presence was commonly reported by hotel guests and owners throughout the years.\u00a0 One personal story that\u2019s been passed along by The Dorrington Hotel\u2019s previous owner and operator, Marc Lanthier, involved two successive photos he took of the hotel\u2019s Christmas lights one year.\u00a0 When he loaded the pictures onto his computer, one came out bright and clear, and the other showed a strange mist engulfing the hotel.\u00a0 We dug up this mysterious photo, which\u00a0The Dorrington Hotel<\/a>\u00a0provided for a news article on Examiner.com about its haunted happenings.\u00a0 What do you think?\u00a0 Is it the ghost of Rebecca?<\/p>\n

Haunted Calaveras: Serendipity (formerly Twisted Oak)<\/p>\n

Not all of the haunts in Calaveras have been reported at the old historic hotels though.\u00a0 In fact, it\u2019s believed that the ghost of Norene Troski, a longtime Murphys resident, still resides in her former Main Street home where she was born and later passed away (1909-2001). After her passing, Jeff and Mary Stai purchased Norene\u2019s property, which has since housed two of their businesses\u2014initially The Enchanted Workshop, then a tasting room for the winery they own,\u00a0Twisted Oak<\/a>.\u00a0 Mary Stai says that Norene\u2019s ghost has been there since they purchased the property. \u00a0\u00a0\u201cEvery now and again, we\u2019d have issues with her,\u201d said Mary. \u201cShe wouldn\u2019t like things we brought in the store.\u201d In one instance, Mary remembers a 5-pound stained glass butterfly nightlight flying off a shelf.\u00a0 She thought she would repair it, but when she placed it on the kitchen counter to fix it, it went flying off there too. She ultimately threw it out.\u00a0 Staff members who\u2019ve worked at both businesses have also reported strange encounters where they think they\u2019ve seen or heard something.\u00a0 Some of them, including Mary, have gotten into the habit of saying good morning to her and thanking her for letting them be in her house. Now Norene\u2019s house is the home of\u00a0Serendipity<\/a>, a boutique style arts and craft shop, as well as a local artisan collective. Haunted Calaveras: Other spooky places in Calaveras\u2026<\/p>\n

Historic Avery Hotel\u00a0\u2013 Built in 1853, the\u00a0Historic Avery Hotel<\/a>\u00a0was a place where you could belly up to the bar and hear old-timers share haunted tales of the Captain, Miss Hazel Fischer and other ghostly guests that would frequent the hotel. Miss Hazel Fischer taught school in the small town of Avery for 48 years from 1916 to 1941 and never missed a day. My Bar Saloon\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Today, the My Bar Saloon\u00a0is a local watering hole in historic Angels Camp, but in the early 1850\u2019s it was the Central Park Hotel and included a brothel upstairs. \u00a0It\u2019s hard to say whether it\u2019s a bartender who has whipped up a good story for the customers, or if there truly have been encounters, but upstairs where the brothel was located is rumored to be haunted. \u00a0\u2013\u00a0Visit 1208 South Main Street, Angels Camp, CA<\/p>\n

Moaning Cavern\u00a0\u2013 While it\u2019s more of a legend than a ghost story, Miwok Native Americans who knew of\u00a0Moaning Cavern<\/a>\u00a0used to tell their children that a rock monster name Yayali who lived in the cave was responsible for the mournful moaning sound (made by the cave) that could be heard across the undulating landscape. If the little ones went too close to the entrance, the monster would capture and devour them. \u00a0This tall tale was intended to protect their children from falling to their death deep within the cavern. However, when the cave was later discovered by European settlers, the remains of approximately 100 early people were found at the bottom of the cavern.\u00a0 So maybe Moaning Cavern is haunted, after all?<\/p>\n

Angels Camp Museum\u00a0\u2013 On the original site of one of four of Angels Camp\u2019s hard rock mines, the Museum\u2019s spectacular Carriage House is said to house more than the area\u2019s family wagons. People have reported hearing faint laughter, smelling peculiar yet pleasant perfume, and soft creaking throughout the building.
