October is a month dedicated to raising awareness about women\u2019s health\u2014a major focus for our county. In the Radiology Department, Mark Twain offers advanced diagnostic tools, including the Tomo Digital Breast Synthesizer (also known as DBT 3D) for mammograms. Acquired and installed in 2020, this 3D imaging technology provides highly detailed breast images that enhance the early detection of breast cancer and reduce callbacks for false positives. Additionally, this system applies less pressure than older machines, resulting in a more comfortable experience.<\/div>\n

The hospital also features a state-of-the-art GE ultrasound unit, purchased recently, and an MRI Breast for more advanced testing. All equipment is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).<\/div>\n

Dr. Athwal, a highly skilled radiologist, leads the team with deep expertise in Women\u2019s Imaging. Karen Henderson, a DBT 3D technician, brings extensive experience in mammographic imaging and is known for her meticulous work and compassionate approach.<\/div>\n

\u00a0Early detection is vital. If you\u2019re 40 or older, now\u2019s the time to get a mammogram to establish a baseline. For those with a family history of breast cancer, speak to your doctor about starting screenings before 40.<\/div>\n

\u00a0By age 65, all women should consider a bone density test. A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test, recommended every other year, can be done with a quick, painless DEXA scan\u2014especially important for those with a family history of osteoporosis.<\/div>\n
