San Andreas, Calif. – Calaveras County Public Health announced today that it has received a $143,078 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support its Injury Prevention Program. The program will promote safe practices for occupants, pedestrians, and bicyclists, as well as fund activities that prevent impaired driving. The grant program runs through September 2025.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

“This grant allows us to develop innovative solutions to public health safety challenges that specifically impact Calaveras County,” said Michael Maga\u00f1a, Calaveras County Health and Human Services Assistant Director. “By focusing on education, awareness, and promoting safe practices, we aim to reduce motor vehicle crashes and prevent injuries. Ultimately, we’re working toward building more walkable and bike-friendly neighborhoods where everyone can travel safely and confidently.”<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Grant funds will support various activities focused on:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

    Community car seat observational studies at school pick-up and dropoff lines.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Host “Bicycle Rodeo” events that encourage safe biking and pedestrian practices.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Bicycle training courses that educate youth on safe riding behaviors.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Helmet fitting inspections and distribution of helmets to children in need.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Community and school education presentations.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Community bike rides that encourage and teach riders safe riding skills.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Partnerships with First 5 Calaveras to host local car seat check and education events with childcare.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Host NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) Certified Car Seat Technician Specialist training for the Amador, Calaveras, and Tuolumne region.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    “The safety of people walking and biking on our roads is a top priority for our office,” OTS Director Barbara Rooney said. “Everyone moves, and not always by car. It’s important that we invest in efforts to protect people walking, biking and rolling that helps establish a strong traffic safety culture where everyone on California roads can travel to and from places safely.”<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
