Sante Fe, NM…(AP)…Gene Hackman, the prolific Oscar-winning actor whose studied portraits ranged from reluctant heroes to conniving villains and made him one of the industry\u2019s most respected and honored performers, has been found dead<\/a><\/span> along with his wife at their home. He was 95.<\/p>\n

Hackman was\u00a0a frequent and versatile presence<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on screen from the 1960s until his retirement. His\u00a0dozens of films<\/a><\/span>\u00a0included the Academy Award favorites \u201cThe French Connection\u201d and \u201cUnforgiven,\u201d a breakout performance in \u201cBonnie and Clyde,\u201d a classic bit of farce in \u201cYoung Frankenstein,\u201d a turn as the comic book villain Lex Luthor in \u201cSuperman\u201d and the title character in Wes Anderson\u2019s 2001 \u201cThe Royal Tenenbaums.\u201d<\/p>\n

He seemed capable of any kind of role \u2014 whether an uptight buffoon in \u201cBirdcage,\u201d a college coach finding redemption in the sentimental favorite \u201cHoosiers\u201d or a secretive surveillance expert in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s Watergate-era release \u201cThe Conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGene Hackman a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity,\u201d Coppola said on\u00a0Instagram<\/a><\/span>. \u201cI mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although self-effacing and unfashionable, Hackman held special status within Hollywood \u2014 heir to Spencer Tracy as an everyman, actor\u2019s actor, curmudgeon and reluctant celebrity. He embodied the ethos of doing his job, doing it very well, and letting others worry about his image.
