Trump announces tariffs to level the playing field for American workers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-187469\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"361\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25.jpg 361w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25-123x70.jpg 123w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite the rhetoric from politicians and the media, studies have repeatedly shown tariffs are an effective tool for achieving economic and strategic objectives \u2014 just as they did in President Trump\u2019s first term.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/MbSab\">2024 study<\/a>\u00a0on the effects of President Trump\u2019s tariffs in his first term found that they \u201cstrengthened the U.S. economy\u201d and \u201cled to significant reshoring\u201d in industries like manufacturing and steel production.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usitc.gov\/publications\/332\/pub5405.pdf\">2023 report<\/a>\u00a0by the U.S. International Trade Commission \u2014 which analyzed the effects of President Trump\u2019s Section 232 and 301 tariffs on more than $300 billion of U.S. imports \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/QXsNB\">found<\/a>\u00a0the tariffs reduced imports from China, effectively stimulated more U.S. production of the affected goods, and had very minor effects on downstream prices.<\/li>\n<li>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/blog\/tariff-increases-did-not-cause-inflation-and-their-removal-would-undermine-domestic-supply-chains\/\">Economic Policy Institute<\/a>, the tariffs implemented by President Trump during his first term \u201cclearly show[ed] no correlation with inflation\u201d and had only a fleeting effect on overall prices.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/why-global-steel-surpluses-warrant-u-s-section-232-import-measures\/\">Economic Policy Institute<\/a>: \u201cFollowing implementation of Sec. 232 measures in 2018\u2014and prior to the global downturn in 2020\u2014U.S. steel output, employment, capital investment, and financial performance all improved. In particular, U.S. steel producers announced plans to invest more than $15.7 billion in new or upgraded steel facilities, creating at least 3,200 direct new jobs, many of which are now poised to come online.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>An analysis by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Explainer-US-Tariffs-on-Mexico-2025.pdf\">Atlantic Council<\/a>\u00a0found that \u201ctariffs would create new incentives for US consumers to buy US-made products.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Former Biden Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NewsHour\/status\/1790510913436487745\">affirmed<\/a>\u00a0last year that tariffs do not raise prices: \u201cI don\u2019t believe that American consumers will see any meaningful increase in the prices that they face.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/NwKHa\">2024 economic analysis<\/a>\u00a0found that a global tariff of 10% would grow the economy by $728 billion, create 2.8 million jobs, and increase real household incomes by 5.7%.<\/li>\n<li>President Trump\u2019s first term steel tariffs led to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/30\/us\/politics\/norway-trump-aluminum-tariffs.html\">thousands of jobs gains<\/a>\u00a0in the metal industry, along with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/trump-trade-policies-to-lift-steel-worker-pay-report\">wage increases<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tariffs were hailed as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/iron-range-jobs-exports-bounce-back-with-help-of-trump-tariffs\/506582012\">boon<\/a>\u201d for Minnesota\u2019s iron ore industry, with state officials crediting them for bolstering the local economy.<\/li>\n<li>Steel and aluminum imports drastically\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Donald-J-Trump-Buy-American-Hire-American-President.pdf#page=11\">decreased<\/a>\u00a0during President Trump\u2019s first term, falling by nearly one-third from 2016 to 2020.<\/li>\n<li>The tariffs led to a wave in investment across the United States, with more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/12\/business\/us-steel-mill\/index.html\">$10 billion<\/a>\u00a0committed to build new mills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/finance\/476807-the-trump-tariffs-keep-working-to-the-consternation-of-many-economists\/\">The Hill<\/a>: \u201cThe Trump tariffs keep working, to the consternation of many economists\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/ratings\/en\/research\/articles\/180302-global-trade-at-a-crossroads-trump-tariffs-forge-better-credit-quality-for-u-s-based-steel-and-aluminum-produce-10456394\">S&amp;P Global<\/a>: \u201cGlobal Trade At A Crossroads: Trump Tariffs Forge Better Credit Quality For U.S.-Based Steel And Aluminum Producers With A Protectionist Stance\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/the-economy\/trade\/article\/21148048\/tariffs-are-keeping-us-steel-production-strong\">IndustryWeek<\/a>: \u201cTariffs Are Keeping US Steel Production Strong\u201d\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWith steel imports down, America\u2019s steelmakers have started investing at home. In addition to Nucor and US Steel, companies like Cleveland-Cliffs, Steel Dynamics, CMC, and AK Steel have invested billions of dollars in at least 16 major new projects throughout the nation. The top five US steel companies more than doubled their total annual investments between 2017 to 2019, from $1.5 billion to $4.2 billion.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Predictably, the media was wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/economy\/trump-tariffs-may-imperil-a-delicate-global-economic-rebound\">PBS<\/a>\u00a0(2018): \u201cTrump tariffs may imperil a delicate global economic rebound\u201d<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cPresident Donald Trump\u2019s announcement Thursday that the United States would impose heavy tariffs on imported steel and aluminum \u2014 with some countries potentially exempted \u2014 suddenly raised a fear that few had anticipated: That U.S. tariffs could trigger a chain of tit-for-tat retaliation by America\u2019s trading partners that could erupt into a full-blown trade war and possibly threaten the global economy.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2018\/03\/01\/589839297\/trump-says-he-plans-to-impose-tariffs-on-steel-aluminum-imports\">NPR<\/a>\u00a0(2018): \u201cTrump Plan To Impose Tariffs on Steel, Aluminum Raises Trade War Fears\u201d<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cChad Bown, an economist and trade specialist, says the tariffs will drive up the price of steel and aluminum for the multiple other industries that use the metals.
