{"id":190283,"date":"2025-04-11T11:10:47","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T18:10:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/?p=190283"},"modified":"2025-04-11T11:10:47","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T18:10:47","slug":"the-state-of-play-why-the-white-house-says-president-trumps-tariffs-are-necessary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/?p=190283","title":{"rendered":"The State of Play: Why The White House Says President Trump\u2019s Tariffs Are Necessary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC&#8230;From the White House&#8230;&#8221;It\u2019s clich\u00e9, yet true \u2014 the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and expecting a different result.\u00a0 The trade policies of the past several decades have failed this nation, its workers, and our communities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-187469\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"361\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25.jpg 361w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WhiteHouse25-123x70.jpg 123w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Twenty years ago,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/14\/opinion\/dangerous-deficits.html?searchResultPosition=11\"><em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0Editorial Board<\/a>\u00a0responded to the January 2005 trade deficit of $58.3 billion by writing an editorial entitled \u201cDangerous deficits.\u201d Deficits are certainly dangerous; former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2009\/feb\/05\/volcker-blames-recession-on-trade-imbalances\/\">said<\/a>\u00a0trade deficits were to blame for the Great Recession.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0wrote in 2005: \u201cAt $58.3 billion, the U.S. trade deficit for January exceeded everyone\u2019s worst expectations\u2026 The trade deficit is the single most important factor in measuring the extent to which the United States lives beyond its means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, our trade deficit has more than DOUBLED. The U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/news\/2025\/us-international-trade-goods-and-services-january-2025\">trade deficit<\/a>\u00a0in January totaled a whopping $131.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The impact has been seen everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1990, manufacturing employment has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/NYMFG\">decreased<\/a>\u00a0by 59% in New York and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/OHMFGN\">decreased<\/a>\u00a0by 35% in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>The loss of these jobs killed innocent Americans and destroyed towns.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.aeaweb.org\/doi\/pdfplus\/10.1257\/aeri.20180396\">Multiple<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352827319300096\">studies<\/a>\u00a0show the loss of jobs due to bad trade deals led to an increase in drug overdoses.<\/p>\n<p>However, liberal commentators have lost interest in fixing this problem. In fact, they are offended at the suggestion that industry should return to America.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Matthews was inexplicably stunned on MSNBC and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/townhallcom\/status\/1909966727754268917\">asked<\/a>, \u201cWhat are we going to do? Have more lumber made in the United States now!?\u201d Yes, we are.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/immediate-expansion-of-american-timber-production\/\">President Donald J. Trump even signed an executive order<\/a>\u00a0to expand American timber production.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Nia Malika-Henderson on CNN ridiculously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/devorydarkins\/status\/1910018727887908969\">asked<\/a>, \u201cIs it worth it to upend the global economy for HVAC jobs?\u201d Apparently, Nia Malika-Henderson thinks preserving low-wage jobs in China is more important than creating high-wage jobs in America.<\/p>\n<p>The loss of American industry means we struggle to build\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/trumps-arctic-goals-demand-icebreakers-but-u-s-struggles-to-build-them-e13a33b9\">ships<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/china-has-cornered-the-market-on-antibiotics-so-the-u-s-must-rebuild-its-manufacturing-capacity-11619640612\">medicine<\/a>, and other essential goods. This is a national security emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, we are already seeing progress in reshoring American industry. President Trump remains undeterred in his mission to Make America Wealthy Again.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Guardian Bikes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/guardian-bikes-powers-american-comeback-with-nations-first-high-volume-bicycle-frame-manufacturing-plant-302425931.html\">announced<\/a>\u00a0it is launching the \u201cfirst large-scale bicycle frame manufacturing operation in the United States.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Novartis\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/novartis-plans-invest-23-billion-us-plants-trump-renews-drug-tariff-threats-2025-04-10\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0\u201cit plans to spend $23 billion to build and expand 10 facilities in the U.S.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Chocolate maker Barry Callebaut\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/barry-callebaut-scale-up-us-production-cope-with-disruptive-environment-2025-04-10\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0it is increasing its U.S.-based production.<\/li>\n<li>JSW Steel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-tariffs-spark-exciting-time-ohio-steel-plant-ceo-eyes-adding-jobs-boosting-productivity\">announced<\/a>\u00a0it will be adding jobs at its Ohio steel plant.<\/li>\n<li>BMW is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/business\/2025\/04\/10\/bmw-production-boost-us-plant\/83034910007\/\">considering\u00a0<\/a>adding shifts to boost production at its South Carolina plant.<\/li>\n<li>Apple\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2025\/02\/apple-will-spend-more-than-500-billion-usd-in-the-us-over-the-next-four-years\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0a $500 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing and training.<\/li>\n<li>Nvidia\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2025\/03\/president-trump-positions-u-s-as-global-superpower-in-manufacturing\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0it will invest hundreds of billions of dollars over the next four years in U.S.-based manufacturing.<\/li>\n<li>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2025\/03\/another-historic-investment-secured-under-president-trump\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0a $100 billion investment in U.S.-based chips manufacturing.<\/li>\n<li>Eli Lilly and Company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/PqRtn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0a $27 billion investment in domestic manufacturing.<\/li>\n<li>United Arab Emirates-based DAMAC Properties\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/01\/07\/trump-announces-20-billion-investment-in-u-s-data-centers\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0a $20 billion investment in new U.S.-based data
