There was never a need for the military to deploy against civilians in Los Angeles. The damage is done, however. We, again, call upon them to do the right thing and end the militarization once and for all.<\/p>\n<p><small>Governor Gavin Newsom<\/small><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_4 news-body-text  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h3><b>End the militarization now<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>For over a month, about 4,000 National Guard members have been serving as political pawns for the President in Los Angeles, pulled away from their families, communities, and civilian jobs. While half are now demobilizing and the deployed Marines are being sent home, many remain without a clear mission, direction, or a timeline for returning to their communities. California urges Trump and the Department of Defense to end this theatrical deployment and send all remaining guardsmembers home immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Community leaders, public officials, veterans and others agree \u2013 the federal government\u2019s actions in California not only have a chilling effect on the state\u2019s society and economy, but also continue to undermine the valuable contributions from members of the military while in and out of uniform.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-101720 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/CalGuard-top-stories-FINAL.png\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1080px, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/CalGuard-top-stories-FINAL.png 1080w, https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/CalGuard-top-stories-FINAL-980x1225.png 980w, https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/CalGuard-top-stories-FINAL-480x600.png 480w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Republican and Democratic former governors agree\u2014Trump\u2019s federalization violates the critical balance between state and federal government. Recently, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/cf4d371f5ee4\/govact-files-amicus-brief-on-behalf-of-30-bipartisan-former-governors-urging-federal-court-to-block-cuts-to-americorps-6208756?e=053d56c70c\">bipartisan group of 25 former governors<\/a>\u00a0filed a brief in support of\u00a0<i>Newsom v. Trump<\/i>, urging the court to enforce state sovereignty and block the unprecedented federalization of the National Guard.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Police off the streets, teachers out of classrooms<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Of the over 4,000 California National Guard members sent to Los Angeles under Trump\u2019s order, the California National Guard estimates that their servicemembers have been pulled from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/07\/01\/national-guard-firefighters-finally-back-to-work-but-trumps-militarization-of-la-has-pulled-cops-from-the-street-and-teachers-out-of-classrooms\/\">essential civilian duties<\/a>\u00a0such as medical and first responders, service workers, building trades contractors, law enforcement personnel, corrections officers, civil service and government workers, technology specialists, educators and teachers, and agriculture workers.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Drugs arriving at the border, fewer soldiers to stop them<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Typically, under the Governor\u2019s command, nearly 450 servicemembers are deployed statewide, including at ports of entry, to combat transnational criminal organizations and seize illegal narcotics.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/06\/25\/more-drugs-at-the-border-fewer-troops-to-stop-them-one-third-of-california-national-guard-counterdrug-forces-pulled-amid-trumps-la-militarization\/\">CalGuard\u2019s servicemembers<\/a>\u00a0dedicated to the state\u2019s Counterdrug Task Force have been reassigned by President Trump to militarize Los Angeles. The consequences are dire \u2013 CalGuard\u2019s efforts help ensure the public safety of communities statewide.<\/p>\n<h3><b>High-ranking U.S. military officials agree<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Retired\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/06\/17\/military-leaders-to-trump-end-las-occupation-we-arent-a-domestic-police-force\/\">four-star admirals and generals<\/a>\u00a0and former secretaries of the Army and Navy filed another amicus brief outlining the grave risks of Trump\u2019s illegal takeover of the CalGuard.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/06\/11\/what-military-experts-are-saying-veterans-unite-against-militarization-of-california\/\">Several veterans and veteran rights\u2019 groups<\/a>\u00a0came together to decry Trump\u2019s militarization of California.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Economic impact of cruel immigration policy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Governor Newsom\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/07\/16\/governor-newsom-calls-on-trump-to-end-los-angeles-militarization-shares-community-resources\/\">recently met<\/a>\u00a0with local restaurant owners in the City of Bell and faith leaders in Downey to discuss the economic impact these indiscriminate immigration actions have had on their small business.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s actions have a ripple effect \u2013 the state\u2019s economy is likely to contract later this year due to fallout from global tariffs and immigration raids in Los Angeles and other cities that have rattled key sectors, including construction, hospitality, and agriculture, according to a UCLA Anderson forecast. Mass\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bayareaeconomy.org\/report\/economic-impact-of-mass-deportation-in-california\/\">arrests, detentions and deportations<\/a>\u00a0in California could slash $275 billion from the state\u2019s economy and eliminate $23 billion in annual tax revenue.
