Based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-bonta-releases-california-criminal-justice-statistical-2\">data<\/a>\u00a0released by the California Department of Justice, nearly every major crime category, including violent crime and homicides, dropped in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Newsom25.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-187475\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Newsom25.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Newsom25.jpg 400w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Newsom25-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Newsom25-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Newsom25-30x30.jpg 30w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recently, President Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/08\/10\/trump-crime-data-federal-takeover\/\">baselessly<\/a>\u00a0deployed military\u00a0 assets in Washington, D.C. to \u201crescue our nation\u2019s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse,\u201d repeating a playbook he used in\u00a0 the Los Angeles region in early June.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_3 quote et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>President Trump is peddling the same tired lie he used in Los Angeles \u2014 claiming there\u2019s rampant lawlessness in Democratic cities like Washington, D.C. The truth? GOP-led cities have higher crime rates. His authoritarian orders aren\u2019t about safety \u2014 they\u2019re an attack on the very foundation of our nation and a slap in the face to democracy.<\/p>\n<p><small>Governor Gavin Newsom<\/small><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_4 news-body-text et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>The irony is palpable \u2013 on Trump\u2019s first day in office in 2025, he pardoned more than 1,500 of his supporters for their actions to invade the Capitol on January 6. His followers assaulted Capitol and D.C. police officers, with more than 140 officers injured that day, one dying on January 7, and others dying by suicide later.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also mentioned Los Angeles, Oakland, and other major cities in which he would similarly seek to deploy troops or federal law enforcement. . Although there was a nationwide spike in crime during President Trump\u2019s first term, California made the choice to invest in \u2014 not abandon \u2014 its families.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Homicide rates<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>California\u2019s 2024 homicide rate is now the second lowest it has been since at least 1966. The overall number of homicides in California decreased by nearly 12% since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s homicide rates have historically been lower than those in many other states. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/sosmap\/homicide_mortality\/homicide.htm\">CDC data from 2022<\/a>, the latest year available for all states, Alabama\u2019s homicide rate was 152% higher than California\u2019s, Oklahoma\u2019s was 41% higher and Arkansas\u2019 was 100% higher.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Mississippi = 1st worst homicide rate of any state in 2022<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Louisiana = 2nd worst homicide rate of any state in 2022<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Alabama = 3rd worst homicide rate of any state in 2022<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Arkansas = 6th worst homicide rate of any state in 2022<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Tennessee = 10th worst homicide rate of any state in 2022<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Oklahoma = 20th worst homicide rate of any state in 2022<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>California Trends: 2023 and 2024<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In 2024,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/07\/02\/crime-in-california-drops-again-state-records-second-lowest-homicide-rate-since-1966\/\">nearly every major crime category declined<\/a>, including violent crime, property crime, homicides, aggravated assaults, motor vehicle theft, burglary, and robbery. In addition, total full-time criminal justice personnel increased 1.9% from 2023 to 2024.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Violent Crime Rate: \u2193 Decreased 6%<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Property Crime Rate: \u2193 Decreased 8.4%<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Homicide Rate: \u2193 Decreased 10.4%<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Aggravated Assault Rate: \u2193 Decreased 6.5%<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Motor Vehicle Theft Rate: \u2193 Decreased 15.2%<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Burglary Rate: \u2193 Decreased 9.1%<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Robbery Rate: \u2193 Decreased 6.3%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Trends over time\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Since 2019, property crime, arson, burglary, and robbery have all decreased in California. Burglary rate decreased 18.8% from 2019 to 2024, the largest decrease of all categories. During that same time period, property crime rate decreased 9.1%, arson rate decreased 8.7%, and robbery rate decreased 9.6%.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Stronger enforcement. Serious penalties. Real consequences.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>While Republicans in Congress pushed their \u201cbig beautiful betrayal\u201d bill that gutted law enforcement funding and the President focused on arresting farmworkers and day laborers, California has shown what real public safety looks like: serious investments, strong enforcement, and real results.<\/p>\n<p>California has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ebudget.ca.gov\/2025-26\/pdf\/BudgetSummary\/FullBudgetSummary.pdf\">invested $1.7 billion<\/a>\u00a0since 2019 to fight crime, help local governments hire more police, and improve public safety. In 2023, as part of California\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=0a4c01f4f8&amp;e=cf6d94251c\">Public Safety Plan<\/a>, the Governor announced the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=e2792ba54d&amp;e=cf6d94251c\">largest-ever<\/a>\u00a0investment to combat organized retail crime in state history, an annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=cf63b229a5&amp;e=cf6d94251c\">310%<\/a>\u00a0increase in proactive operations targeting organized retail crime, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=483fc04251&amp;e=cf6d94251c\">special<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=397f099a26&amp;e=cf6d94251c\">operations\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=7b7d0c3749&amp;e=cf6d94251c\">across<\/a>\u00a0the state to fight crime and improve public safety.<\/p>\n<p>Last August, Governor Newsom signed into law\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=6bad43e3a8&amp;e=cf6d94251c\">the most significant bipartisan legislation to crack down on property crime in modern California history.<\/a>\u00a0Building on the state\u2019s robust laws and record public safety funding, these bipartisan bills offer new tools to bolster ongoing efforts to hold criminals accountable for smash-and-grab robberies, property crime, retail theft, and auto burglaries. While California\u2019s crime rate remains at near historic lows, these laws help California adapt to evolving criminal tactics to ensure perpetrators are effectively held accountable.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the state\u2019s largest-ever investment to combat organized retail crime, Governor Newsom announced last year the state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2024\/02\/28\/orc-survey-result\/\">distributed<\/a>\u00a0$267 million to 55 communities to help local communities combat organized retail crime. These funds have enabled cities and counties to hire more police, make more arrests, and secure more felony charges against suspects.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Saturating key areas\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Working collaboratively to heighten public safety, the Governor tasked the California Highway Patrol to work with local law enforcement to saturate high-crime areas, aiming to reduce roadway violence and criminal activity in the area, specifically vehicle theft and organized retail crime. Since the inception of this regional initiative, there have been over 7,300 arrests, more than 5,000 stolen vehicles recovered and over 350 firearms confiscated across<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2024\/12\/04\/ongoing-chp-operation-in-bakersfield-leads-to-over-2000-arrests-since-april-including-felonies-and-dui\/\">\u00a0Bakersfield<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/03\/25\/five-months-after-launch-san-bernardino-public-safety-efforts-yield-858-arrests-66-stolen-vehicles-recovered\/\">San Bernardino<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/04\/03\/99192\/#:~:text=Apr%203%2C%202025-,One%20year%20after%20launch%2C%20state's%20enhanced%20enforcement%20in%20Oakland%20recovers,and%20170%20illicit%20firearms%20seized.\">Oakland<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sacramento, CA&#8230;Newsom says that&#8230;&#8221;While the President continues his assault on democracy, this time by threatening to deploy federal law enforcement officials to states across the country, California has brought down crime in nearly every major category.
