The event marks the first commencement held at the department\u2019s newest training facility, located at the former Castle Air Force Base in Merced County.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_3 quote et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p>With every graduating class, California is expanding its world\u2011class firefighting force and preparing for the challenges of tomorrow. The administration has increased CAL FIRE\u2019s staffing to record levels, added new firefighting aircraft, expanded defensible space programs, and modernized command and communications infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>As California faces longer and more complex fire seasons, the Atwater Training Center stands as a cornerstone of CAL FIRE\u2019s next generation of readiness and leadership development.<\/p>\n<p>Company Officers play a critical role in CAL FIRE\u2019s mission. They lead crews during emergencies, assume initial Incident Command, and oversee readiness, training, and fire prevention efforts during non-emergency periods. The academy prepares them for this leadership transition through standardized, statewide instruction.<\/p>\n<h2><b>California invests in wildfire response and prevention capabilities<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The firefighters graduating today at the new training facility are yet another clear example of California\u2019s investment into protecting communities up and down the state.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020 the date has doubled the investment into wildfire prevention and resilience efforts. California invested more than $2.5 billion in wildfire resilience, with an additional 1.5 billion to be allocated from the 2024 Climate Bond.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month the California Governor\u2019s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) alongside key partners like CAL FIRE announced the groundbreaking of the state\u2019s new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/10\/16\/governor-newsom-expands-response-arsenal-with-new-emergency-services-facility-in-southern-california\/\">Southern California Regional Emergency Operations Center<\/a>\u00a0in Costa Mesa, California. The new center will be a\u00a0 resource to help Southern California communities when major wildfires threaten their community.<\/p>\n<p>California invested\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/06\/25\/governor-newsom-announces-135-million-available-for-new-wildfire-projects-amid-trumps-assault-on-resources-protecting-communities\/\">$173 Million for community based wildfire projects<\/a>\u00a0to help California communities protect themselves from wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Newsom recently announced that California joined\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/09\/05\/as-trump-administration-retreats-california-joins-forces-with-northwest-wildland-fire-fighting-compact\/\">the Northwest Wildland Fire Fighting Compact<\/a>\u00a0that expands the state\u2019s mutual aid partners during major wildfire incidents from partners across the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Atwater, CA&#8230;Governor Gavin Newsom announced the first graduating class of Company Officers at CAL FIRE\u2019s new Atwater Training Center, marking a major step forward in the state\u2019s continued investment in firefighter training and wildfire preparedness.
