San Andreas, CA…The Calaveras County Office of Education held its 36th Annual Math Mini-Bowl competition at Calaveras River Academy\/Mountain Oaks School in San Andreas on Thursday, May 26, 2016. Approximately 120 fifth and sixth grade students from Calaveras County Schools put their math skills to the test. The following schools were represented: Albert Michelson Elementary, Avery Middle School, Christian Family Learning Center, Hazel Fischer Elementary, Jenny Lind Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary, Rail Road Flat Elementary, San Andreas Elementary, Valley Springs Elementary, West Point Elementary<\/p>\n

\nJames Pryor, a 6th grader from Avery Middle School , won 1st place in the Blitz, tied for 2nd place in the Huddle, and was part of the 2nd place Bomb team. Kierian O’Donnell, a 5th grader from Hazel Fischer Elementary, took 2nd place in the Blitz, 1st place in the Huddle, and was part of the 1st place Bomb team.<\/p>\n

Students work in pairs to compete in the Huddle, part of the Calaveras County Math Mini Bowl.
\nNew to the competition was the addition of Google Chromebooks. Students had to think quickly and develop new, on-the-spot strategies for the Blitz, an individual test, and the Huddle, a pairs test. Tests were created on Google Forms where students were tested on a variety of math problems aligned to the New California Common Core Standards. The Bomb, a 5-person-team test, remained a written test.<\/p>\n

The online administration of tests proved to be a faster, more efficient option, reducing paper waste and increasing accuracy in the grading of tests.<\/p>\n
