Lake Alpine, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is pleased to announce the formal reopening of State Route 4 (SR-4)\/Ebbetts Pass for the 2026 season as of 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Our Woodfords and Camp Connell Maintenance crews made great progress with their snow removal operations this season to reopen State Route 4 prior to Memorial Day.<\/p>\n

Ebbetts Pass was formally closed to traffic for the 2025-26 winter season in late December and the closure gates have largely remained at Lake Alpine and Raymond Meadows for most of the winter.<\/p>\n

This season while clearing Ebbetts Pass our maintenance crews encountered down trees, debris, and significant snow levels along some extremely narrow one-lane corridors. Caltrans top priority is ensuring the safety of the traveling public and our workers along with supporting the economic vitality of our local communities. We are happy to reopen State Route 4 for the season without incident and to allow early public access for recreation activities along Ebbetts Pass.<\/p>\n

Caltrans urges motorists to still use caution while driving the Sierra Mountain pass routes and watch for icy road surfaces in the overnight and early morning hours.
