Principal Scott Nicotero traveled to Anaheim, California on April 24 to accept the award on behalf of the Avery Middle School community at a statewide ceremony hosted by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.<\/p>\n
Established in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Program celebrates schools that demonstrate exemplary achievements and strong student outcomes. The award recognizes schools that have made significant progress in closing achievement gaps, while also maintaining high levels of academic performance for all students. In 2026, middle and high schools across California were eligible for this distinction, with honorees identified through the state\u2019s accountability system, the California School Dashboard.<\/p>\n
Avery Middle School\u2019s recognition reflects its commitment to academic excellence, student growth, and equitable outcomes for all learners. Schools earning this distinction must meet rigorous criteria, including strong performance across multiple state indicators, high levels of student participation in statewide assessments, and positive school climate measures.<\/p>\n
