Despite those difficult circumstances, she has proven to be remarkably sweet-tempered, affectionate, and resilient. As she has settled into shelter life, her personality has blossomed, revealing a dog who genuinely enjoys people and forms connections easily.

One of the joys of watching Peggy is seeing her rediscover the simple pleasures of being a dog. After spending months focused on motherhood, she now delights in walks, playtime, and the freedom to run. Volunteers have been charmed by her exuberant zoomies and playful invitations to join her games. She enjoys affection, happily leans in for attention, and has a gentle way about her that makes her easy to love.
Peggy is active and athletic, as many dogs with Malinois heritage are, but she also has a soft, affectionate side. She walks reasonably well on leash, enjoys spending time with her people, and seems eager to embrace whatever comes next. After everything she has been through, it’s hard not to root for her.
For much of her young life, Peggy has been taking care of others. Now she deserves a family of her own—a place where she can leave her past behind, sleep soundly, play freely, and finally be someone’s beloved companion. The next chapter of Peggy’s story should be all about her.
To meet Peggy, contact: Calaveras County Animal Services, (209) 754-6509 or animal@calaverascounty.gov
Please use Peggy’s intake number (A060702) when making inquiries.
All dogs available for adoption at the Calaveras Animal Shelter are up to date on their routine vaccinations and will be microchipped. All unaltered dogs must be spayed or neutered before they can go home with you.

Animal Services has a Fee Flexibility Program!
The shelter is currently over 80% capacity, so adoption fees are reduced: just $40 for dogs and $30 for cats. Cats who arrive at the shelter already altered can be adopted for only $10. With the 55-5-5 Program, adopters age 55+ can adopt a pet over 5 years old for just $5.

June 13: Free Dog & Cat Rabies Vaccine and Microchip Clinic, from 9-11:30 AM at the Calaveras Government Center, 891 Mountain Ranch Road.
