Calaveras County, CA…The next Calaveras County \u201cDrop the Drugs\u201d event is coming up on Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 9am-1pm at two locations in the county. <\/p>\n

\u201cDrop the Drugs\u201d sites are the parking lots at:
\nCalaveras County Office of Education, Angels Camp (next to Calaveras Lumber)
\nToyon Middle School, between San Andreas and Valley Springs<\/p>\n

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.<\/p>\n

During \u201cDrop the Drugs\u201d days, residents can get rid of expired, unused, or unwanted prescription or illegal drugs. Uniformed officers will accept the material, and request that all identifying information be marked out or removed. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked, but collection sites are not equipped to receive sharps (needles.)<\/p>\n

The traditional methods for disposing of unused medicines\u2014flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash\u2014pose potential safety, environmental, and health hazards. Returning unused drugs to law enforcement agencies for destruction is the most environmentally responsible method of disposal.<\/p>\n

The August 2016 collection event removed 273.5 pounds of potentially dangerous drugs and medications from the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrop the Drugs\u201d days are sponsored by the Calaveras County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Calaveras County Office of Education, Calaveras County Behavioral Health Services, and the Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention.<\/p>\n

Community members who cannot attend the event can drop off drugs any day during business hours at permanent \u201cDrug Drop Boxes\u201d at the Calaveras County Sheriff\u2019s Office in San Andreas or the Angels Camp Police Department.<\/p>\n
