The eight-day “Highlands to Islands: Ultimate Fiji Explorer” with O.A.R.S. is one of National Geographic Traveler’s “50 Tours of a Lifetime.” From your beachfront resort, the adventure includes Class II-III whitewater rafting through a narrow canyon with dozens of cascading waterfalls; soaring over the rainforests on a zip-line canopy tour; sea kayaking on Beqa Lagoon; and snorkeling in kaleidoscopic reefs. <\/p>\n

This unique community-based eco-tourism program on the Fijian Island of Viti Levu was made possible by O.A.R.S. President and Founder George Wendt, who was also a passionate advocate for youth mentoring in Calaveras County. In 1998, O.A.R.S. worked with native landowners to set up low-impact commercial whitewater rafting trips on the Upper Navua River in Fiji. Two years later, the land on both sides of the river was designated as a conservation area with a 25-year lease that prohibits logging, road building or mining in the fragile river corridor. All guides are native Fijian, hired locally, with a stake in the long-term sustainability of the region and to date, the indigenous community has earned more than $1,000,000 through lease payments, trip fees, guide pay and related financial contributions.<\/p>\n
