{"id":52312,"date":"2018-02-02T08:28:55","date_gmt":"2018-02-02T16:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/69.46.6.243\/?p=52312"},"modified":"2018-02-02T08:28:55","modified_gmt":"2018-02-02T16:28:55","slug":"snowpack-below-average-despite-gains-says-dwr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/?p=52312","title":{"rendered":"Snowpack Below Average Despite Gains Says DWR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sacramento, CA&#8230;Despite moderate January precipitation in the Sierra Nevada after an historically dry December, today\u2019s Department of Water Resources (DWR) manual snow survey east of Sacramento found little snowpack there, two months into what is typically California\u2019s wettest three months.  Measurements at Phillips Station revealed a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 2.6 inches, 14 percent of the early-February average at Phillips as measured there since 1964. SWE is the depth of water that theoretically would result if the entire snowpack melted instantaneously.<br \/>\n\u201cCalifornia experiences the most variable weather in the nation,\u201d said DWR Director Karla Nemeth. \u201cIt\u2019s vital that water conservation efforts remain consistent regardless of the year\u2019s precipitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/45ku4bKWQy0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>More telling than a survey at a single location like Phillips are DWR\u2019s electronic readings today from 103 stations scattered throughout the Sierra. Measurements indicate the SWE of the northern Sierra snowpack is 4.6 inches, 27 percent of the multi-decade average for today\u2019s date. The central and southern Sierra readings are 5.8 inches (30 percent of average) and 3.8 inches (25 percent of average) respectively. Statewide, the snowpack\u2019s SWE is 4.9 inches, or 27 percent of the Feb. 1 average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe snow survey today shows water content far below average for this time of year,\u201d said Frank Gehrke, chief of the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program who conducted today\u2019s survey at Phillips. \u201cToday\u2019s measurements indicate an anemic snowpack to date, but there is still the possibility of a wet February and March.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On average, the snowpack supplies about 30 percent of California\u2019s water needs as it melts in the spring and early summer. The greater the snowpack water content, the greater the likelihood California\u2019s reservoirs will receive ample runoff as the snowpack melts to meet the state\u2019s water demand in the summer and fall.<\/p>\n<p>The Phillips snow course, near the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road, is one of 260 that are surveyed manually throughout the winter.
