Murphys, CA…More than 200 people gathered to celebrate the life of Barden Stevenot on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the Old School House in Murphys. Stevenot\u2019s wife, Annie, was presented with two proclamations honoring his contributions to the county. The Calaveras Board of Supervisors signed one and the other was written, signed and presented by the mayor of Angel\u2019s Camp, Amanda Folendorf. \u201cBarden was influential in the community and made improvements that greatly benefitted the City. His legacy will be felt for generations to come,\u201d Folendorf read at the event. <\/p>\n

The Calaveras County proclamation recorded many of Barden\u2019s lifetime achievements that created jobs and brought commerce into the county. It is estimated that through Stevenot\u2019s many business ventures, approximately 1,200 jobs were created locally. Stevenot was well known for the winery he started in 1973, which laid the groundwork for the county\u2019s thriving wine business; however, he also ran several mine operations including Carson Hill and he was instrumental in developing both Kirkwood Ski Resort and Greenhorn Creek Golf Community.<\/p>\n

The Angel\u2019s Camp proclamation focused on his family\u2019s history and impact on the county and more specifically the city.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the organizers auctioned heirlooms and artifacts from the Stevenot family\u2019s rich history in the area. Over $15,000 was raised to benefit the Barden Stevenot Scholarship Fund for local students. Many winery owners were in attendance, including John and David Oliveto, the current owners of the Stevenot label; they presented a $500 check to the scholarship fund.<\/p>\n

A short film was screened at the Black Bart Theater featuring Barden as he chronicled his life and times in Calaveras County. The film was made by Martin Huberty, a distant relative of Barden\u2019s and a well-known film producer.<\/p>\n

The film will be made available on YouTube within a few weeks; both proclamations will be on display at local museums. Donations to the Barden Stevenot Scholarship can be sent to the Calaveras Community Foundation, PO Box 1436, Angel\u2019s Camp, CA 95222 <\/p>\n
