<\/p>\nFolsom, CA…A correctional officer is recovering from injuries sustained during an attack by an inmate Wednesday at California State Prison, Sacramento (CSP-SAC). A second officer was also injured while responding to that incident. At noon Wednesday, June 13, inmate Maurice Daniels left his cell in a housing unit on Facility C. He walked past a correctional officer overseeing the area and suddenly punched him in the face.<\/p>\n

The officer struggled with Daniels and responding staff were able to quickly quell the incident and secure Daniels in restraints using physical force and a baton.<\/p>\n
The two injured officers were transported to an outside hospital for medical treatment.<\/p>\n
The officer who was initially struck suffered injuries to his hand and face. He is still being evaluated for a broken nose. He has a bruised eye, swelling and redness to his face and pain in his shoulders and back. A responding officer was also treated for a suspected fracture to his hand. He was given a splint and released from the hospital, but is scheduled to return for additional tests.<\/p>\n
Daniels sustained a laceration to his right eyebrow, requiring sutures. He was treated at CSP-SAC and will be transferred to another institution, where he will be placed in the administrative segregation unit.<\/p>\n
Inmate movement on CSP-SAC\u2019s C Facility is limited as officials investigate the attack.<\/p>\n
Daniels was received by CDCR from Sacramento County on Sept. 25, 2009, with a 14-year sentence for first-degree burglary, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.<\/p>\n
Activated in 1986, CSP-SAC is a high-security prison that houses approximately 2,155 general population inmates and employs about 1,700 people. The institution houses long-term inmates, inmates requiring specialized mental health programming, and inmates with high-risk medical concerns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
