{"id":6743,"date":"2015-07-08T17:36:42","date_gmt":"2015-07-09T00:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/69.46.6.243\/?p=6743"},"modified":"2015-07-08T17:36:42","modified_gmt":"2015-07-09T00:36:42","slug":"senate-committees-briefed-on-going-dark-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/?p=6743","title":{"rendered":"Senate Committees Briefed on Going Dark Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC&#8230;Today, Director Comey appeared before two separate U.S. Senate committees to speak on the Going Dark issue, a growing challenge to public safety and national security that has eroded law enforcement\u2019s ability to obtain electronic information and evidence with a court order or a warrant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Fullscreen-capture-782015-53125-PM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Fullscreen-capture-782015-53125-PM.jpg\" alt=\"Fullscreen capture 782015 53125 PM\" width=\"522\" height=\"375\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Fullscreen-capture-782015-53125-PM.jpg 522w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Fullscreen-capture-782015-53125-PM-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Fullscreen-capture-782015-53125-PM-124x90.jpg 124w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Fullscreen-capture-782015-53125-PM-150x108.jpg 150w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Fullscreen-capture-782015-53125-PM-500x359.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 522px) 100vw, 522px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>First, before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Comey\u2014along with U.S. Department of Justice Deputy Attorney General Sally Quillian Yates\u2014continued the public discourse on the Going Dark issue, which involves the impact of emerging technologies on the ability of law enforcement to use lawful investigative tools and follow critical leads. \u201cThe benefits of our increasingly digital lives,\u201d according to Comey, \u201chave been accompanied by new dangers, and we have been forced to consider how criminals and terrorists might use advances in technology to their advantage.\u201d He said that the FBI is seeing a growing number of cases\u2014from homicides and kidnappings to drug trafficking, financial fraud, and child exploitation\u2014where critical evidence is coming from smartphones, computers, and online communications.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Comey focused specifically on how terrorist groups, including ISIL, use technology such as social media to communicate in order to both inspire and recruit. While some of these conversations take place on publicly accessed social networking sites, others take place over encrypted private messaging platforms. And, as Comey explained, these \u201cchanging forms of communication are quickly outpacing laws and technology designed to allow for the lawful intercept of communication content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the Going Dark issue, Comey and Yates said that the Department of Justice and the FBI must work with Congress, industry, academics, privacy groups, and others to come up with an approach that addresses multiple and competing legitimate concerns. \u201cBut,\u201d they added, \u201cwe can all agree that we will need ongoing honest and informed public debate about how best to protect liberty and security in both our laws and our technology.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC&#8230;Today, Director Comey appeared before two separate U.S. Senate committees to speak on the Going Dark issue, a growing challenge to public safety and national security that has eroded law enforcement\u2019s ability to obtain electronic information and evidence with a court order or a warrant.
