Angels Camp, CA…The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is delighted to name Arnold resident Christine Saul as its April 2019 Mentor of the Month. Christine has been matched with her twelve-year-old mentee, Aeryn, for almost a year and a half. \u201cChristine is the perfect mentor for Aeryn,\u201d said Kathryn Eustis, director of Student Support Services for the Calaveras County Office of Education. \u201cShe has a deep understanding of kids and showers Aeryn with love and attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

Christine recently retired from a career as a school psychologist and has lived in Calaveras County for eight years. She also volunteers as a docent at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. \u201cThis seemed like a natural fit for me, after having worked with youth in the schools,\u201d said Christine. \u201cI wanted to spend time with kids in a way that was not work! I wanted to have fun, and this was a natural progression.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aeryn and Christine love to do crafts and hands-on activities. Aeryn likes all of the activities they do together. She said, \u201cChristine always has something fun planned. She is super fun!\u201d<\/p>\n

Last summer they made homemade lemonade and sold it at a garage sale. \u201cAeryn is quite the salesperson!\u201d said Christine.<\/p>\n

Aeryn\u2019s dad, Brian Kelly, is pleased that she has a mentor. \u201cIt\u2019s important that Aeryn has someone who makes her feel special and important,\u201d he said. \u201cOver the past 2 years she has become much more outgoing and confident. I think she has benefited from having a person who is there just for her. Spending time with Christine is something that she always looks forward to and she comes home excited about all the stuff they did.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked what she likes best about mentoring, Christine said, \u201cWatching someone grow and knowing that this time makes a difference for them. It surprises me. We were painting rocks for an aquarium and I wasn\u2019t even sure she liked it, but when it was time to go she didn\u2019t want to leave!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you really want to make a difference in someone\u2019s life, this is a sure way to do it,\u201d said Christine. \u201cYou may not be aware of the impact you\u2019re having, but you see it down the line and it grows and grows. I\u2019m so happy to see how joyful Aeryn is now!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHappiness!\u201d is Aeryn\u2019s word for what she gains from having a mentor.<\/p>\n
