\nOur 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man\u2014Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world\u2019s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary\u2019s name came from the group\u2019s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.<\/p>\n
The Four-Way Test<\/p>\n
FIRST:
\nThe development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service<\/p>\n
SECOND:
\nHigh ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian\u2019s occupation as an opportunity to serve society<\/p>\n

\nThe application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian\u2019s personal, business, and community life<\/p>\n
FOURTH:
\nThe advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.<\/p>\n
