The order prohibits landlords from evicting tenants for nonpayment of rent and prohibits enforcement of evictions by law enforcement or courts. It also requires tenants to declare in writing, no more than seven days after the rent comes due, that the tenant cannot pay all or part of their rent due to COVID-19.\u00a0 The order is effective immediately and will apply through May 31, 2020.\u00a0 Builds on the Governor\u2019s previous executive action authorizing local governments to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2020\/03\/16\/governor-newsom-issues-executive-order-to-protect-renters-and-homeowners-during-covid-19-pandemic\/\">halt evictions<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1-86x54.jpg 86w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1-120x74.jpg 120w, https:\/\/new.thepinetree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gavinsigning-400x250-1-378x237.jpg 378w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The tenant would be required to retain documentation but not required to submit it to the landlord in advance. And the tenant would remain obligated to repay full rent in a timely manner and could still face eviction after the enforcement moratorium is lifted.
