California now has 5,763 confirmed cases. More current numbers may be available from\u00a0<a title=\"CDPH LOCAL HEALTH SERVICES\/OFFICES web page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Pages\/LocalHealthServicesAndOffices.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">local health jurisdictions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>5,763 \u2013 Positive cases*<br \/>\n135\u00a0\u2013 Deaths**<\/p>\n<div>*In order to better focus public health resources on the changing needs of California communities, the state is no longer collecting information about how individuals contracted COVID-19. Community transmission of COVID-19 has been identified in California since late February, and since early March, most of the confirmed cases in the state were not related to travel outside of the United States.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>**California is no longer including the death of the one non-California resident. That death is being included in another state\u2019s tally.<\/div>\n<p>Ages of all confirmed positive cases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Age 0-17: 65\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>Age 18-49: 2,973\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>Age 50-64: 1,447 cases<\/li>\n<li>Age 65+: 1,252\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>Unknown: 26\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gender of all confirmed positive cases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Female: 2,581\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>Male: 3,083\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<li>Non-binary: 0 cases<\/li>\n<li>Unknown: 99\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Testing in California<br \/>\nAs of 2 p.m. PDT on March 28, approximately 83,800+*** tests had been conducted in California. At least 27,251 results have been received and another 56,550 are pending.\u00a0\u00a0This includes the latest numbers California has received from commercial, private and academic\u00a0labs, including Quest, LabCorp, Kaiser, University of California and Stanford,\u00a0and the 22\u00a0<a title=\"Map of the California Public Health Laboratories  with COVID-19 Testing Capabilities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CID\/DCDC\/PublishingImages\/COVID-19\/COVID-19-CaliforniaMap-March18-01.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state and county health labs<\/a>\u00a0currently testing.<\/p>\n<p>***This week\u2019s cumulative testing numbers are lower than last week due to an inadvertent over-reporting error discovered by one of the private labs.<\/p>\n<p>How People Can Protect Themselves<br \/>\nEvery person has a role to play. Protecting yourself and your family comes down to common sense:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Staying home except for\u00a0<a title=\"California Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response Stay at home except for essential needs web page\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19.ca.gov\/stay-home-except-for-essential-needs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">essential needs\/activities<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Practicing social distancing.<\/li>\n<li>Washing hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds.<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.<\/li>\n<li>Covering a cough or sneeze with your sleeve, or disposable tissue. Wash your hands afterward.<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.<\/li>\n<li>Staying away from work, school or other people if you become sick with respiratory symptoms like fever and cough.<\/li>\n<li>Following guidance from public health officials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What to Do if You Think You&#8217;re Sick<br \/>\nCall ahead: If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough or shortness of breath) and may have had contact with a person with COVID-19, or recently traveled to countries with apparent community spread, call your health care provider before seeking medical care so that appropriate precautions can be taken.<\/p>\n<p>More information about what Californians can do to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is available on the\u00a0<a title=\"California Coronavirus Response website home page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.covid19.ca.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Coronavirus Response website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>California continues to issue guidance on preparing and protecting California from COVID-19.
