Suspect Arrested for Assault with a Firearm and Kidnapping

Angels Camp, CA…On May 10, 2020, at about 6:30 PM the Calaveras County Dispatch Center received a 911 call regarding an argument at a residence in rural Angels Camp. Deputies were dispatched to the residence to investigate the disturbance. While responding, Dispatch received information that the victim of the disturbance was at the Shell Gas Station, Angels Camp, with injuries sustained from jumping from a moving vehicle.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that Suspect Anthony Renato Mateo IV (18-year-old male, Angels Camp) was in an argument with the victim. During the argument, he pointed a firearm (handgun) at the victim, demanding the victim get into his truck. While traveling west on Hwy 4 outside of Angels Camp, Mateo noticed a family member of the victim following him. Mateo pulled to the side of the road and engaged in a verbal argument with the family member demanding they stop following. Mateo got back into the truck and began to drive away. The victim seized the opportunity to escape and jumped out of the truck as the vehicle entered the roadway. The victim was taken by the family member to meet emergency medical staff and deputies.

The victim received injuries from the escape, as the vehicle was moving at approximately 20 mph at the time of the escape. The victim was transported to a valley hospital for treatment of injuries.

Anthony Renato Mateo IV was arrested a short time later without incident. He was booked into the county jail and charged with 207 PC Kidnapping (Felony), 245(A) (2) PC Assault with a Firearm on a Person (Felony) 422 PC Criminal Threats (Felony) and 243(E) (1) Pc Domestic Battery (Misdemeanor). Due to the nature of the crimes, he does not qualify for release due to The State of California’s Judicial Council $0 bail order. Mateo is being held with a bail of $150,000.00.
